A vigorous west to southwesterly airstream is resulting in strong to gale force winds through Bass Strait today, with significant wave heights of around 6m through the west and 6-7m through the east.
The passage of a cold front overnight tonight will see winds strengthen further, reaching storm force through eastern Bass Strait after midnight. Significant wave heights in eastern Bass Strait are also forecast to increase to around 8m during the early hours of Thursday morning.
As winds tend more southwesterly overnight tonight and during tomorrow, this could drive large waves into onshore and beach areas of exposed coasts west of Cape Otway and, in particular, the East Gippsland coast east of about Lakes Entrance, where the stronger winds and larger waves present the potential for some coastal erosion.
Note that Marine Wind Warnings are current, as is a Severe Weather Warning for damaging winds for land areas.

A great news piece from WIN News Gippsland over the weekend, about one of the first graduates from LSV and Ambulance Victoria's multicultural pathways project, which aims to help diversify Victoria's emergency services.
Over the past eight years Ali Tahiri has progressively completed a number of water safety education programs and qualifications with LSV, and currently works at YMCA Casey RACE as a pool lifeguard. Now Ali has taken his training a step further to become an Ambulance Community Officer in Foster.
