WAGSTAFF CATCHES FIRE TO BREAK NZ STREAK

A fourth-quarter scoring explosion by Perth's Jesse Wagstaff has stopped the Breakers in their tracks in Auckland and ended the league leader’s run of nine successive victories.

The 89-73 win marked Perth’s first win across the ditch in their last nine efforts and the Wildcats’ first win against New Zealand in six games.

Wagstaff became the closer down the stretch for Perth with four final-term threes and some smothering defensive plays to stave off a resilient New Zealand side.

JP Tokoto was unstoppable on the offensive end showing off his feathery touch on his way to 25 points on 64 per cent shooting.

Edgar Sosa (10 points, seven assists) and Alex Pledger (15 points) impressed early before Perth opened a buffer in the third period to the obvious frustration of Breakers coach Paul Henare.

New Zealand will attempt to bounce back against Brisbane on Sunday night while Perth will look to carry its momentum into round nine when they play Adelaide and Illawarra.
