Sportingscribe.com travels the width and breadth of Australia filming drag racing events with the occasional hot rodding and speedway event thrown in, all packaged up in video edits usually within a week of the event finishing.  Scheduling and growth of the industry has made it difficult to find the editing time to process all the action in a reasonable time frame. My quest here at sportingscribe.com is to set up a live streaming service that will deliver the same content to my viewers, live as it happens. All the action from the Australian National Drag Racing Association Summit Sportsman Series plus selected marquee events including hot-rodding from around Australia delivered live right onto your device.  Perth Renew With ANDRA for 2017/18 Season
 



As owner and manager of Perth Motorplex, VenuesWest has renewed its agreement with the Australian National Drag Racing Association (ANDRA) for a second year as the sanctioning body for Drag Racing for the 2017/18 racing season.

ANDRA Acting General Manager Brett Stevens said, “ANDRA has a long association with Perth Motorplex and we’re excited to once again be involved with the venue and the Perth drag racing community.”

David Etherton, VenuesWest CEO said “ANDRA has consistently proven themselves in providing outstanding sanctioning services, both to Perth Motorplex and other motor sports venues around Australia. We look forward to working with them to produce another great season.”

The drag racing season kicks off on 1 October with the 2017 Nostalgias Drag Racing event.

VenuesWest delivers world class sport and entertainment experiences across its portfolio of thirteen venues which include Perth Arena, nib Stadium and Perth Stadium due to be completed in early 2018.

These are in addition to HBF Stadium, HBF Arena, WA Athletics Stadium, Bendat Basketball Centre, SpeedDome, Perth Motorplex, Champion Lakes Regatta Centre, WA Rugby Centre, State Netball Centre and the Western Australian Institute of Sport High Performance Service Centre.

 New Copper ANDRA Championship Trophy


 

One of the most prized trophies in Australian championship drag racing has always been the ANDRA Christmas Tree trophy. Sometimes referred to as the holy grail, its the one everyone wants to show off to family and friends.

Welcome to the newest edition to the championship lineup - the copper ANDRA Christmas Tree. Following the announcement in June of the 2017 Summit Racing Queensland Championship series, ANDRA approved the addition of the copper trophy for all class winners. 

The tri-series launched with Rd 1 at Palymra Raceway back in July and this Saturday, September 2nd see's Rd 2 hit Beneraby Raceway. The Grand Final of the Summit Racing Queensland Championship will be held at Ironbark Raceway on November 4th.

"When we were putting together the concept for the Summit Racing Queensland Championship we wanted to come up with something unique which initially was to be a half scale silver Christmas tree trophy, said ANDRA Acting GM Brett Stevens. "But after some more thoughts, we agreed on a full-size trophy in copper. We are hoping that it will stimulate some interest from not only local Queensland racers but also some interstate racers who want to add a copper tree to their display cabinet.

 Welcome To Our New ANDRA Technical Officer

Say hello to ANDRA's new Technical Officer Scott Halfyard.

"Hi everyone my name is Scott Halfyard, your newly appointed ANDRA Technical Officer. I just started on Monday 28th August so please be a wee bit patient with me as I come up to speed. 

Based in the Adelaide office alongside Brett & the other ANDRA folks, I’ll be absorbing their wealth of knowledge and taking on board plenty of their advice over the next few weeks and months to come.

My background has some Metallurgy with NDT (Non-Destructive Testing) involvement. I have also worked in Precision Farming as well as for Shannons, so I’m anticipating elements from each of those roles will allow me to pick up the Technical Officer role and run with it.

Going forward over the next few weeks I’ll be posting up some information so please feel free to message the ANDRA Technical Facepage if you have any direct questions for us. 

I’m really looking forward to getting involved and hopefully seeing some of you out at events soon.

 Group 2 Super Series Trial Release

Following input from the Index Review Committee, promoters at Calder Park and Perth Motorplex and approval from the Division Directors, ANDRA will be trialling an exciting new race format.
 
The trial will take place at the November 25th round of the Summit Racing Equipment Sportsman Series the “Rowe Memorial”.
 
Group 2 categories that have fields at the event e.g. Competition, Super Stock, Competition Bike and Super Comp, will be involved in the trial.
 
This would be known as the Competition Eliminator Super Series, Super Stock Super Series, Competition Bike Super series or the Super Comp Super Series.
 
The system on trial still provides some of the advantage that the quicker cars/ bikes may have compared to their index whilst providing further opportunity for competitors that are slower against their index by allowing them to come back and race rather than being eliminated in the first round of traditional eliminations.
 
By removing the index adjustment between rounds and the finalists only being the quickest winners from the third round it should remove some (not all) of the back off passes, improving the show for spectators.
 
The trial as detailed in the attached spreadsheet, titled Super Series trial seeding, would see all competitors in Group 2 complete qualifying as per normal processes and seeded into a maximum 16 car field.
 
From there each competitor would get to race in 3 ‘Elimination’ rounds where points would be issued for a win and lose.
 
The highest point’s scorers from the ‘Elimination’ rounds would then compete in a final; deciding the winner and runner up.
 
Some points to note –
  • National Records and Indexes will be as per current
  • National Records can still be set as per the rulebook “In Group Two any runs capable of supporting a new National Record during eliminations and a maximum of one run from qualifying will be used to calculate the new record.”
  • There will be NO index adjustments between rounds of eliminations
 
Points will be allocated on the basis of 20 points for round win and 10 points for a round loss.
 
Where more than two competitors are tied on the highest points after 3 rounds the tie breaker will be best performance against the index in Elimination round 3, if still a tie
 
Second tie breaker will be best performance against the index in Elimination Round 2

ET/ Speed Records – 5 / 5 points

Runner up 80
Win 3 Elimination rounds but doesn’t make final 60

 Please note on the attached spreadsheet the 16 car field has been populated as per qualifying from Supercomp at the Grand finals of the 2016/17 season as an example.

 Entries Open For Rd 4 Summit Racing Equipment Sportsman Series



The Spring Nationals Drag Racing event is a Summit Racing Equipment Sportsman Championship Round, with the ‘Best of the Best’ Sportsman Drag Racers in Australia all competing to win an ANDRA Silver Christmas Tree - Plus USA vs Oz Jet Car Spectacular!

This is a critical event for all National competitors to ensure they stay ‘in the points’ in order to be able to contest the National Championship later in the year at the Grand Finals (also at AIR on March 23/24 2018).

Event General Information:

  • Friday afternoon bump in (12pm –7pm)
  • Credentials Friday 4pm-7pm, Sat 8am-12pm
  • Competitor gates open Saturday 7am
  • Spectator Gates Open Saturday 9am
  • Qualifying commences at 10am Saturday
  • Elims Start approx. 3:30am
  • Finals to be run approx. 4:30pm

Fun Day Rounds Out Fantastic Weekend.

Mildura/Vic, Aus. 29th August 2017. The 2nd annual 1/8 Mile Nostalgia Drags event at Mildura’s Sunset Strip will be marked down as a huge success with close to 100 old school nostalgia entrants contesting across 8 brackets, a class field of Willy’s for their Nationals and of course the popular fun day which rounded out the event.

Campers had started setting up at Sunset Strip on Thursday with the promise of some fantastic entertainment over the weekend. Entrants were greeted with a get to know you meal on Friday evening which was accompanied by the usual refreshments. Robert and Janina Kuchel were responsible for the clubhouse catering and had planned a delicious menu to feed the racers over the weekend. Some 220 odd meals were prepared on Friday evening with close to 300 prepared for the fans on Saturday night. Speaking of catering, there was also a breakfast on the Sunday morning which consisted of pancakes and all the trimmings just to make sure the racers left the facility choc a block.

Driving into Sunset Strip Friday evening, the first thing that come to mind was how many campers had already set-up. No way was I going to park in my normal spot as it was full of campers. I parked up, got out of the bus and just took a minute to take in all the activity in the pits. I couldn’t believe the growth of the event in just one year. After taking a moment, I headed over to the clubrooms where I found it to be brimming with laughter and all the old stories. It was well into the morning when the last of the bunch decided to pull the pin.

Saturday was race day with racing scheduled to fire up at 9.30am. Track prepper Dean James had the surface ready to go and signalled to race director Tim Reidy all was good. Time for the meeting to be handed over to the official starter in Paul Hornsby who immediately got things running.

Timing issues meant that the program fell behind somewhat with the possibility of a shortened schedule on the cards. The racers originally had 2 qualifiers and 3 rounds of a Chicago Shootout format scheduled in with the highest two points winners going head to head in the final of each of the 8 brackets. At one stage officials were looking at dropping one of the Chicago rounds to ensure the meeting finished on time. Tim Reidy elected to stick to the original format and after some slick organising by all concerned, the meeting was back on track and finished not that far outside the original window.

And Peter Gourzis over Matthew Smart in Oz Muscle.

What a day it was with plenty of tyre frying action from the Vintage Gas, big horsepower plays from the Top Eliminator gang and some major lifting by the guys in Top Gas. Nice to see Summit regulars Ned Karanovic, Jayden Talbot and Jason Keily pick up wins in their respective categories.Ned KaranovicJayden TalbotJason Keily

Great track prep by Dean James with plenty of PB’s going down throughout the day. Andrew Braithwaite picked up a PB in his FED on the way to 3 wins from 3 starts. A loose final run put paid to his finals chances. Actually, there were stories like this one all over the day which made the day so exciting.

The win by Keily in Top Eliminator (Supercharged Outlaws) was a nice shot in the arm coming into the Summit round at the same venue in a month’s time. Obviously, Tim Stewart had been in Keily’s ear as Jason said in his speech that he was coming for Tim. Jase, you were the winner, it should be him coming after you! Talbot had his last run in the FED taking over the “Forever Young ll” Supercharged Outlaw funny car from older brother Wayne who will move into the ex-Maclean funny car in Top Alcohol.  

Massive tandem lift by Charlie Pitt and Dylan Argent in Top Gas being one of the day’s highlights. The bracket had a lot of Summit regulars but in the end, it was a popular win by Super Sedan runner Ned Karanovic over Top Sportsman runner Julian Carafa.

Vintage Gas had the usual heavy hitters with Hayley leading the burnout charge. Kemp is normally the king of burnouts around the Victorian tracks but was off a touch this weekend while Hayley had laid down some killer skids. Kemp had the final word on the argument taking a win over Hayley in the last round and in the process knocked Hayley out of the final. Regular Chevy runner Peter Raines kept the V8 flag flying with a win over the six pack of Romano Puntin’s FJ driven by Peter O’Leary.

Clare Dousset had the 32 Roadster down pat and took it up to the boys throughout the day. I didn’t see Clare drop a race all day as she marched on to win the final of Hot Rod over Edwin Emanuelli in the 36 Ford Coupe. Seasoned drag racer Noel Inman in the Tall T was a late withdrawal from the event. Some fine examples of Hot Rodding in this class both in engineering and sheer horsepower.

American Muscle could have quite easily been re-named American Tanks as some of the cars were just that. Winner Mike Bowden drove a 67 Ford Galaxie that looked as long as a cricket pitch. Add an Impala, the Karanovic’s Barracuda and a Dodge into the mix and you have a fine cross sample of American muscle. Paul Jennings Chevy Nova Wagon and Endre Papp’s 65 Mustang Fastback added class to the field.

Junior was choc a block full of Summit Junior Dragster racers with Cannyn Hayes taking wins over more fancied opponents. Hayes won the final over Holly Camilleri with Brooke Camilleri not far behind the two. Nathaniel Kuchel was getting valuable experience while Tommy Turic was honing in on his recent good form in the Northern Territory. Daniel “Batdan” Carranza was debuting a pair of chutes after he crossed the line which obviously are just for looks. Just on that, Carranza has in my opinion one of the best-looking drag cars in any bracket. The next time you’re at a Summit round, go and check out the Batdan car in the junior dragster category.

And finally, we had the dancing Peter Gourzis driving a VC Valiant taking a win in OZ Muscle over Matt Smart in the 202 powered Corolla. This was by far the biggest field with fine examples of Australian motoring scattered throughout the field. The Falcons of the Carusi brothers were definitely standouts as was Anthony Raschella’s HR ute.

That finished the days racing and it was over to the club house where more than 300 meals were dished up to hungry racers. A band played rock a billy music for the next 3 hours as the racers sat back and relaxed with some of the liquid amber on offer. The night eventually finished up well into Sunday morning with race fans back on deck around 10am to sign in for passenger rides.

What a fantastic idea to have rides available for passengers. After a driver’s and passenger’s briefing we headed over to the accreditation van, signed on as passengers, paid the insurance levee and headed over to our rides. I had organised Ashley Hayley in the 55 Gasser to be my ride and what an unbelievable experience it was. I have posted an article on my experience with “Haywire” the 55 Chev owned by Ash Hayley. Lots of other passenger rides going on with drop flag drag racing the order of the day. This was a casual fun day with everyone walking around with smiles on their faces which in the end typified the whole weekend. Just one big motoring party.

What a fantastic event that has grown big time from the inaugural event last year. Judging by the growth of this year’s event, I suggest race fans get in early for next year’s event as it wouldn’t surprise me if the club was forced to put a cap on entries due to the popularity.

Well done to Lauren and Kingsley Kuchel and all the Sunraysia Drag Racing staff which I must say are mostly young crew (fantastic for the sport), Dean James for a killer racing surface, imports Tim Reidy and Paul Hornsby for their support with the meeting, Robert and Janina Kuchel for the clubhouse catering and of course the Australian Nostalgia Racers and all the support racers.

Awesome event that will just grow in popularity as the years go by. Add this to Sunraysia’s Easter Shootout and the club has 2 marquee events that are capable of supporting the club for years.  

Next up for the club is round 3 of the Summit Racing Equipment Sportsman Series where club officials are expecting a record entry list.

My Ride

Mildura/Vic, Aus. 29th August 2017. Well what a day! Day 2 of the Sunraysia 1/8 Mile Nostalgia event had the fans queueing up in the credentials van looking to register for the ride of a lifetime. For a small administration fee to cover insurance and an indemnity sign-off, first timers like myself had the opportunity to jump into a full-blown drag car and take a lap. Man, how exciting It was just lining up in the queue knowing that the Haywire 55 Chev passenger seat had my name all over it.

To set the scene, my interest in drag racing started back in the late 80’s at Calder Park where I would take my boys along to watch all the heroes of the era. I was lucky enough to be interested in the sport at the height of the Australian drag racing scene but never ventured any further into the sport other than being a spectator. I have done the V8 Supercar thing at Calder as a driver, done rallyx, driven a clapped out sprintcar at the Derby Speedway and driven exotic supercars on a racetrack in New Zealand, so jumping into Haywire would be a unique experience for me and one I had been looking forward to for weeks.

So, the time had come to buckle up into the passenger seat of Ash Hayley’s 55 Gasser Chev known as “Haywire”. For the record, I’m not a good passenger and I don’t do amusement park rides as they make me ill, so this was going to be interesting to say the least. Having said that, I was so excited to be in the car knowing that I was about to take the ride of a lifetime in a car that let’s face it, wasn’t anything like a Huntsman Customline or a Spud Russell Camaro.

So, with all the safety checks done and a 5-point harness pulled as tight as I could get it, it was time to fire up the 383 small block chev. What a sound, nothing better than listening to a competition small block chev with open exhausts, and sitting on top of one was even better.

We rolled around into the staging lanes where there was a bit of a line up so Ash shut down the 55 giving me time to talk about the Australian Nostalgia Racers and the day in general. After some good interview footage, it was finally time to get rolling as we crept into the burnout box.

At this stage, I was quite calm just waiting to go and it’s wasn’t long before Haywire was revving at 7500rpm pushing the 55 ever so slowly down past the start line as Ash warmed up the rear slicks. What a moment! It was loud, the car was vibrating and the cabin was starting to fill with tyre smoke. Doesn’t get much better than this and I can understand what drives the burnout boys in their competitions. I had the video camera switched on filming indiscriminately as we backed up over the start line. Feeling good at this point trying to catch all the emotion of the occasion as we rolled up to the start line. This was so cool rolling through the start line at full noise, tyres blazing and that unmistakable small block chev sound ringing out through the firewall.

So, the time had come as we crept up to the start line. The starter waited for us to get ready as he held up the green flag. This was going to be a solo pass for Haywire. I wasn’t thinking too much at this stage and was very relaxed sitting in the car waiting to run the 1/8 mile. Ash stopped the car on the start line, adjusted a few things, yelled out to see if I was ready and then proceeded to lift the revs. I thought I knew what was coming and calmly sat in the seat loosely holding the video camera that was strapped to my hand.

Well, how the hell did I get that so wrong! We left the line at maybe 7 or 8000 rpm which instantly threw me back into the seat scaring the crap out of me. The video camera had gone skywards filming the roof and unbeknown to me had shut down due to the extreme grip I had on the camera as I was thinking, well I don’t know what I was thinking at that particular moment. I know what I was thinking a moment later and that was where the hell is this finish line. We only had 200 metres to cover but it seemed like miles. I couldn’t believe the power of the initial launch and the fact that this car was hauling all the way down the strip. Absolutely no wheel spin, just sticking to the track like it was part of the racing surface. I still can’t believe sitting here that this car didn’t break into wheel spin after feeling the pull of the car all the way through the run.

By now my eyes were totally focussed on the timing boards down the way which signalled the end of the 1/8 mile. I have no recollection of what was going on around me and can remember looking at that sign board just hanging for the car to reach it. It seemed like it took forever but in reality, it was just a touch over 6 seconds. We hit the sign board and I thought thank goodness that was over as my heart was racing at a million miles an hour. But no, Ash had the foot buried well past the finish line or at least it seemed that way. I can remember thinking, bloody hell, just pull up as we went deep into the first turn off. Ash jumped on the brakes hard as he aimed for the first exit and it seemed like he wasn’t going to make it. Here I am with stuff racing around in my head as Ash goes deep into the corner sending my brain into panic mode again thinking, we’re not going to make it and a trip into the dirt was on the cards.

Calmly Ash navigates the corner with I bet plenty of time and we proceeded to go up the slight rise of the return road signalling the end of the run. Well, instantly relief came over me that it was all over and I just started yelling out expletives one after another as Ash turned to me and said, “did you enjoy that”. I can still remember the feeling of relief I had at that moment and the unbelievable moment in my life that I will never forget. No time to think if I liked it as I was just gathering my thoughts when Ash give the accelerator a quick dab which would have lasted no more than a milli-second. Instantly I thought, shit, here we go again! Funny how your mind plays games when the adrenalin is running. Even though it has been a couple of days since then, I can still clearly recall my thoughts of the moment and even thinking we were going again when Ash gave the accelerator a squeeze.

Well, the ride was over as we made our way down the return lane past the spectators and into the pits. Ash backed the 55 into his designated spot and calmly shut down the small block. He took off his helmet, looked at me with a smile and said “how’d you go”. Well my hands were shaking feverishly as I tried to unbuckle my helmet and I can vividly remember breaking out in a cold sweat as I sat in the car. Even though I’m a huge petrol head, I had no idea that drag racing could be so addictive and feeling firsthand the rush I got as we left the line gave me the insight into a drag racers life. This run was in a 55 Gasser and I can still remember one of the first things I said to Ashley as we exited the car, “just imagine what it’s like in a Top Fuel car”. Even now I’m thinking about what it would be like in an Outlaw car and having just come back from the Top End Trek where Tim Stewart and Dave Thornton competed in Supercharged Outlaws, the rush would be so addictive. To go even a step further, our poster boy Wayne Talbot put down a 6.16 pass at just under 240mph over the ¼ mile distance in Alice. Our time would have been slower than that over the 1/8-mile distance. I just can’t comprehend what that feeling would be like in a high-powered drag car. The region has 2 Top Fuel teams being the AEG Powertools team of Darren Morgan and the Lamattina Top Fuel Racing team of the Lamattina family. Impossible to think what Darren Morgan or Kelly Bettes experience when they leave the line with 10,000hp under their foot.

Straight away Ashley offered up another ride which I accepted hesitantly but quickly said I’ll just check the vision. Well as you will see in the clip, I turned the vision off as we launched which should be easy to understand after explaining the ride. Mmmm I said to Ash, no vision, I must have turned it off. Ash just smiled and said, “well that’s it, we’ll just have to go again”.

Ok, so this was all going to happen again but at least this time I knew what to expect. Same procedure as last where we waited in the staging lanes for our turn. This time we would run against another car which I must admit hadn’t registered at all in my brain. I was starting to get anxious again as the car rolled into the burnout box. The trouble was I knew what was coming and what an impact it had on me the first time so there was still some sort of trepidation as we rolled into the water. Ash stood on the gas as we calmly rolled out of the water at 7,000rpm. I knew it would be the burnout, back up, line up and then bang! We would be on our way. Had this all sorted and although I knew the procedure was still peaking a touch. Half way through the burnout Ash pulled up and said “Nah, doing that again”. Well that was it! All of a sudden, my thought pattern went into overdrive! I have no doubt that if I was steering the car the reaction would have been different. It’s just this passenger and theme park thing I talked about earlier.

So, we did another burnout, this time nudging at 8,000rpm as the car laid down a couple of black straps halfway down the 1/8th. Rolled back with the car full of smoke and that familiar smell of burning rubber. Next, we rolled onto the start line with the starter ready to drop the flag. We had another car in lane 1 but it still hadn’t registered as I was only thinking about getting to that sign board 200 metres down the track. To be honest, I was “shittin bricks” Ash yelled out “ready” as we waited for the flag to drop. This time I had both hands holding onto the video camera with my right thumb firmly strapped into the handle so I wouldn’t squeeze the on-off button. I was definitely anxious as we waited for the flag to drop. The revs went up, the flag dropped and bang the car stuck just like last time. I can remember all this noise and me being pushed back into the seat hard. You can’t believe how tight I pulled the straps this time just for that extra bit of security even though Ash had said the first time out, “make sure there’re tight”. We were hauling arse down the 1/8th and I can remember once again just wanting to get to that sponsor’s board as my heart was racing big time. My face would have been a picture of terror as the car just kept hauling. Just as we were getting to the end of the run Ash gestured with his hand to look over in the other lane. I swung the video around to capture “Haywire” catching Matt Smart’s Corolla as we crossed the line. Apparently Matt had got the jump on us but we were able to haul him in before the finish line. As I mentioned earlier, the fact that we were racing another car hadn’t registered at all and self-preservation was the only thing running through my head. Up until that point in time my focus had been purely on pointing the camera at the finish line. The ride like last time seemed violent to me with my hands flying around everywhere. The vision shows my left hand that was supposed to be holding the camera steady, floating around in front of the video. I tried so hard to concentrate on keeping my left hand out of the vision but unfortunately my mind was pre-occupied with my self-preservation.

A strange thing happened when I swung the camera around to capture Matt in the Corolla. A calmness descended upon me and all of a sudden time seemed to stop. No more anxiety or wanting to get to the finish line. As a matter of a fact, sitting here, I can’t recall looking for the finish line on the second run after I swung the video around. Ash even took the first exit in the same manner as the first run and I couldn’t have given a rats. I bet if he stabbed the accelerator a few times going down the return road I would have enjoyed it. How strange it was that a small gesture of looking in the other lane completely changed the focus and the tension that had built up long before the start. I looked down at the video to see the filming light was still on and give a Wuhu to Ashley as we cruised down the return road. I have no doubt that Ash picked up on the fact that I was a lot calmer after the 2nd run maybe thinking it may have been boring for me. If he was thinking that then he would have been way off as I was peaking right before the start. I just can’t believe how time stopped for me when I swung around with the video. It was like I had all the time in the world and as I sit here now I can’t recall the car hauling over the line with me pushed back in the seat even though I know that to be the case. Strange, but that summed up the moment.

Dave Thornton was over at the pits when I rolled up after the second run and asked how I went. Well I just started going on and said I couldn’t imagine what it would be like steering his altered. His instant reply was “so you want to go out and buy a drag car now” for which I replied “I would if I could afford one”.

I gathered up my film equipment and headed over to the start line to capture more people like me doing the passenger ride thing. Ned Karanovic was busy running passengers in the 57 Chev and even wife Karen had put down 3 laps behind the wheel. Speaking of the Karanovic’s, Nic offered up a ride in the Plymouth Barracuda which I politely declined citing the reason that I had to get on my way. The truth be known, my head was still out there after the “Haywire” experience so a polite no thankyou and apology to Nicolas was easy.

How appropriate that the car I did my first ever run down the drag strip was named “Haywire”. Couldn’t have better described my situation especially on the return road after the first run. I will never forget that minute or so in my life that was simply Haywire. I have tried to bring you into the moment that was my passenger ride and have left nothing out of what has been an unbelievable experience. For drag racers, this story is most likely long forgotten and some race fans getting into a car the first time may not have the same experience but if you ever get the chance to jump into a drag car, do it!

A huge thank you to Kingsley and Lauren Kuchel and all the Sunraysia Drag Racing Association including track prepper Dean James for putting up the event and keeping it safe, the Australian Nostalgia Racers and most of all Ashley Hayley. I’m forever indebted to Ashley for giving me the opportunity to take a run down the drag strip. A time in my life that I will never forget.

Norman Goes European With The R/T Marine Prepared BMW

Adelaide, SA/Aus. 16th June 2017. 2015 Australian Super Stock champion Steve Norman will debut his new ride this weekend at the Adelaide Drag Race Promotion’s Sunday Funday at Adelaide International Raceway. Having been out of the racing seat for the past 15 months, Norman is itching to get some seat time in the R/T Marine built BMW coupe which had been in the pipeline for about 5 years.

I dropped a line to Steve to find out a bit more on the vision he had with the BMW, “Well I noticed the BMW sitting in the Perth Motorplex pits at a Westernationals 5 years ago and straight away thought about debuting a Super Stock version” he said. Norman went on to say “I got the boys (Ryan & Reg Lee) to measure it up and here we are 5 years later with an unbelievable version of European motoring”.  Norman added, “we embarked on the project less than 2 years ago with Ryan Lee from R/T Marine responsible for making it happen. Along with his father Reg and the help of others, the team has put together a race car that is as good as anything I’ve had in the past” he said. Norman went on to say “the attention to detail is simply unbelievable and I cannot fault any part of the build at all. I had enormous trust in the boys to get the job done and they certainly haven’t let me down” he said.

The history of the car is quite chequered with the car originally part of a divorce settlement in the USA. Legend has it that the ex-wife snatched the BMW, poured acid over the boot and then proceeded to drive the car into a dam. The Norman camp found the car at a salvage yard via a friend in the USA and the rest is history.

The guy responsible for the unique transformation was Ryan Lee who owns and operates R/T Marine SA, a business that had its roots in boat repairs but has now expanded into fibreglass auto products, vehicle modifications and of course complete race car builds. I caught up with Ryan and his father Reg to find out more on this simply stunning build and started by asking Ryan his thoughts on the BMW build “absolutely over the moon. The team has done a fantastic job on the car with the end result being an amazing BMW Super Stock car”. Ryan added “ we took possession of the car from the US and completely gutted the car in order to get it ready for the build. Originally, we looked at a Jaguar but because it had an aluminium body it was going to be too expensive to put chrome moly bar work through the car. It then come down to transforming either a Mercedes or BMW car into a MP Super Stock car. We measured up a BMW in the pits at the Perth Motorplex and found that everything would fit and the rest is history” he said.

After being stripped back to a bare shell the car was sent to interstate chassis builder John Lang to get the bar work installed along with some tin work. Ben Seal was then called in to complete the tin work which included all the necessary bracketry, front end and 4 link suspension points. Ben worked solid for 3 straight weeks and then dropped in after hours on more than half a dozen occasions to complete any alterations that were required. Also helping out on the tin and aluminium work was Doug Elsworthy from Elsworthy’s Chassis Shop.

The running gear was fitted up to see what alterations if any were required. The running gear for this project come out of the championship winning Chevy Cobalt and consists of a 312ci Bob Book small block coupled to a 3 speed Pro Flight transmission. Power is transferred down to the JRI sprung titanium housed diff via a carbo fibre tail shaft. Lamb front struts work nicely with Lamb carbon fibre disc brakes to provide plenty of stopping power.

Next it was the job of brother Bryce with help from good friend Matt to prep the body and bar work for paint. Bryce spent a solid 3 weeks straightening the panels alone before prepping the car for paint which in the end was coated with Electric Orange. I asked Ryan what the most difficult part of the build was and he mentioned choosing the paint color. “I first suggested orange to Steve but that was rejected with a pearl white looking like the color. I liked black but in the end, it was Steve’s decision and after some deliberation Steve decided that it would be Electric Orange” he said. Ryan added “I think the color choice was spot on as it certainly showcases the car”.

Once the car was painted it was time to fit out the car and that’s when Reg took over. The car was completely re-wired starting from a bare shell and color coded to MSD color codes. Every wire was color matched to components with all original hinges used. The boot retains its electric opening operation keeping some originality with the car.

The interior was completely re-trimmed by Vicki in the color of their choice still incorporating the woodgrain in the dash and door trims. The attention to detail with the trim is unsurpassed with Steve Norman noting how the interior trim was altered to incorporate bar work encroaching into the door armrests. The choice of trim color certainly adds to the build and compliments the vision the boys had when they first set out to build the car. Asked what the most pleasing part of the build was, they both responded simultaneous with “today”. “Having the car 100% finished with nothing to do but turn the key is definitely the most pleasing part of the build” said Ryan. The car is built to 25.5 C SFI specification as a MP car and will initially be running in Gas.

Now that the car is 100% completed the next thing to do is get some laps into the car. As noted, the team will head out this weekend to Adelaide International Raceway to put down an installation pass testing out things like brakes, tracking, parachute and the like. They hope to get at least a second pass in which with all things being equal will be under full noise. The fact that they are using the running gear out of the Cobalt, takes away the uncertainty of how the drivetrain will go and leaves the team with one less thing to worry about. The team hope to run a private test next weekend and provided they meet all parameters will debut the car for competition in round 3 of the ANDRA Summit Racing Equipment Sportsman Series at Sunset Strip Mildura in late September.

Obviously to put together this masterpiece the team relied on some outstanding help with Steve Norman thanking Ryan and Reg for their commitment with this build. With regards to the workshop activities Ryan and Reg would like to thank Bryce and Matt for the paint, Ben Seal for the fabrication, Doug Elsworthy for additional fabrication, John Lang for bar work, Vicky from Vicki’s Trimming Shop, Motorsport Connections, Craig at RCE, BMW Adelaide and Brett Henley from Henley Chassis for all his advice.

Outlaw Stewart Heads Up Nitro Convoy On Back Of Easter Win.

Melbourne, Vic/Aus. 21st May 2017. Victorian Tim Stewart has settled nicely into the outrageously loud and wild drag racing bracket known as Supercharged Outlaws. The “Outlaw” bracket caters for supercharged doorcars, dragsters and funny cars that are limited to no quicker than 6.50 seconds over the ¼ mile distance. Providing the most spectacular side by side drag racing in the sportsman category, Supercharged Outlaw machines can take a number of years for race teams to get their heads around the set-up and this certainly looked the case for modified come outlaw racer in Tim Stewart. Having purchased the ex-Aaron Russell “Russler” Mustang Funny Car, Stewart provided the small block powerplant that was once again going to power up the old-school Mustang. Sportingscribe.com was on hand to capture the debut of the re-born Mustang at a local Test N Tune day run at Calder Park Drag Racing. After a strong burnout, Stewart had to pack up the car courtesy of a blown power plant. It was back to the drawing board for the team that coincidently have the slogan “Throwback” highlighted across the race team uniforms.

Less than 12 months down the track and the “Stang” race team have tasted victory lane with a win in the prestigious Gateway Tavern “Easter Supercharged Outlaws” event at Sunset Strip Mildura. Being one of the biggest Supercharged Outlaw events on the Australian drag racing calendar, the event attracts some of the biggest heavy hitters in the bracket with the 2017 version no exception. Stewart was the only racer to win all rounds in the Chicago Shootout format with wins over Mark Newman, Mark Kuhn, the returning Paul Stephen and Dale Tucker in the final.

Speaking with Stewart recently, I asked the former modified racer why Outlaws? “It’s something I have always looked at. I like the idea of the man and machine format that comes with Supercharged Outlaws where the focus is on the driver pedalling the car down the race track the best they can using extreme horsepower combinations”. Stewart went on to say “it was the 3rd race meeting for the car with the Easter Shootout always the focus for the team. Last year I managed to win the Modified bracket as a support for the Outlaws but to win the feature event in our first attempt with the car is quite unbelievable especially given the circumstances leading up to the event” he said.

Stewart had spent the 4 days leading up to the event in Adelaide caring for his gravely ill father who sadly passed away on Good Friday. It was then a hastily organised flight back home to pick up the race truck and head for Mildura to contest the 2017 Easter Shootout. “Yeah it was a pretty hectic time for Sue and myself. We booked the flights back home at 1.30pm on Good Friday after dad had passed away. I drove as far as Bendigo that night but had to hand over the driving duties to Sue for the rest of the journey. Understandably my reaction times were all over the place during qualifying but everything seemed to come together once racing started” he said. Stewart flew straight back to Adelaide after the race meet to help out with funeral arrangements for his father.

Stewart’s next mission is to take on the territory with some of his drag racing buddies as they prepare for the road trip of a lifetime heading north in July for the opening rounds of the Australian National Drag Racing Association’s 2017/18 Summit Racing Equipment Sportsman Series starting with the “Nitro Up North” event at Darwin followed by the “Dessert Nationals” the following week in Alice Springs.

A “Nitro Up North Convoy” has been put together by a group of Victorian racers which departs from Mildura’s Sunset Strip on Saturday the 15th of July for the road trip of a lifetime which will take in the two ANDRA sanctioned drag racing events. Talking with Stewart on the upcoming new sportsman series it was easy to see how excited he was with the prospect of the 2 ½ week road trip. I asked Tim about the proposed road trip, “yep it’s going to be huge. So far, we have the Stewarts, Thorntons, Kuchels and Talbots on board for the trip with possibly Spud Russell’s car in the convoy along with a few others. We head out of Mildura on the Saturday stopping above Port Augusta the first night. We plan to stop north of Coober Pedy the 2nd night with Alice Springs Inland Dragway our destination for night 3. From there we will keep cruising the Stuart Highway stopping Tuesday night along the highway and then cruising into Darwin Wednesday evening with a stopover for the night at Adam Murrihy’s A&M Cranes depot. From there we head to Hidden Valley Drags on Thursday morning which is only 10 minutes down the road from the A&M Cranes depot. At this stage, there are no set plans for the week in between the two race meetings but sportingscribe.com has jumped on board to assist with this part of the road trip" he said.

At sportingscribe.com we are pleased to announce that we will be covering the road trip in its entirety starting out of Mildura with daily video edits covering each day’s activities leading up to the race days and then dedicated coverage of the Nitro Up North Convoy race teams competing at both the Nitro’s and Dessert Nationals. This year sportingscribe.com will embark on a different format whereby we will be covering a nominated bracket each round with dedicated video edits of pit activity, qualifying and eliminations for that bracket with minimal video footage from other sportsman brackets complimenting the race coverage. By introducing this format, we heavily reduce the time commitments required to produce up to 9 individual brackets per round (don’t have the time required), instead opting for a more dedicated video edit for the nominated bracket. For the NT Convoy, we will feature Convoy race teams rather than a dedicated sportsman bracket.

Sportingscribe.com are currently working in with NT Tourism with regards to promoting the event and places of interest both along the way and in between the two events. Christie Thornton (daughter of Outlaw racer Dave Thornton) has jumped on board to assist with putting the video package together. Christie has just finished a university degree in Tourism and Event Management and will bring fresh ideas to the video coverage of the road trip. As noted, we hope to produce a 3-5-minute grab of the day’s activities spent on the road and by the campsite each night with a more substantial grab of racing activities during the 4 days of racing.

Talking with Tim about the convoy, he mentioned that race teams are quite welcome to join in the convoy stating “the more the merrier”. To join the Nitro Up North discussion group simply contact either Tim or Sue Stewart through their respective Facebook pages or any of the other racers that have jumped on board the convoy. The convoy is currently represented by Top Alcohol, Supercharged Outlaws, Junior Dragster and Modified Eliminator brackets. Sportingscribe.com will also be providing updates on the convoy as they come to hand. This is one road trip that we can’t wait to get into filming. Should be epic!

ANDRA will be crowning the 2016/17 Championship awards at the conclusion of the Summit Racing Equipment Drag Racing Grand Finals at Adelaide International Raceway on April 1.

The Championship presentation will be held in the Startline VIP tent on Saturday night after the event winners and runner-ups are presented their trophies.

 AAAA Drag Racing Presentation Opportunity


The Performance Racing and Tuning ( PRTC) council of Australia is a sub-group of the Australian Automotive Aftermarket Association and will be holding a meeting on Wednesday 29th March at Street Fighter in Edwardstown SA.

"We invite you to come along and share an hour or two with our members and would be delighted if you could spare 10-15 minutes for a general presentation on what it takes to be a professional drag racer in this era", said AAAA Robert Johnson.

 Technical Update: Martini Turbo 1400 Fuel Update

Martini Turbo 1400 Unleaded is no longer an ANDRA Homologated Fuel as of 16th March 2017.

ETS Racing Fuels have added another fuel to the ANDRA Homologated fuels list. This is alongside their XPRODRAG 2 fuel and is called P14, a very high octane leaded fuel for high compression NA, Turbo and Supercharged engines. P14 will be allowed in ANDRA competition from 1st April 2017.

 ANDRA Board Meeting Outcomes


One National Series proposed

At a recent Board meeting the board agreed to back input received from many in the driver’s leadership groups asking ANDRA to lead the strategy of developing a one series format for next season.

The Board have agreed to a one series concept approach for next season and requested the management team to put up some models of what this may look like for the Board to formalise, this process will take a few weeks. ANDRA will then look to consult with a number of race promotors and drivers how a one series scenario can move ahead next season.

Chairman Terry Jongen said, “The ANDRA Board are committed to doing all it can to concentrate on a primary goal of a one series approach for next season. The Drivers consider a dual series costly and fragmented. Ideally it will involve a ‘what is best for the industry’ methodology from all parties required to make this happen. ANDRA is going to lead the initiative and will be as flexible as it needs to ensure there is something for everyone. The two series model is not sustainable and creating unnecessary financial outlays.

National Racing Calendars are complex to produce but we remain optimistic this can be achieved. When we have some models to discuss and we have consulted with Driver Groups, we will then contact promotor groups, including the 400 Thunder Commission to facilitate a way forward. We will also look to meet with Willowbank and Sydney race venue representatives who will be requested to have one event each involved in a national series, without their agreement nothing will change. The new national series model needs to showcase Group 1 whilst taking into consideration all other Sportsman brackets.”

Queensland ANDRA State Championship

The Board also approved an idea tabled by Glenn Cunningham from Palmyra to implement a State Championship in Queensland next season. The Board have requested Glenn’s committee work with tracks at Roma and Benaraby to suggest a model for next season, this work has already started. Racers will compete for a specially designed ANDRA State Championship. Once we have the tracks input ANDRA will look at how this bolts onto the national series. If other state tracks are interested in also developing a state championship submission are welcome through their Division Councils.

Division Director of Northern Australia for ANDRA, Nathan Peirano, said, “We are thankful that three ANDRA member tracks are working together on this great initiative and see it as a win for the sport in Queensland, the Northern Australian Division has been discussion this concept for over 12 months so it is great to see these tracks running with it. We also acknowledge the work that Glenn and his committee have put into working on the State Championship concept.

Glenn Cunningham the President of the Palmyra Drag Racing Club said, “ANDRA by embracing this concept have given its members in Qld the ability to compete in a series that is recognised and will crown a State Champion in all sportsman Group 3 and 4 classes. The series will assist in promoting our sport in the Qld regional areas and I look forward to the time when State Championship points can be used in the ANDRA National Championship Grand Final event.”

 Leaded Fuel Ban In Australian Motorsport

The current position of the Minister for the Environment and Energy is that the use of leaded fuel in Australian Motorsport is to be banned from July 1st, 2019. ANDRA support a removal of lead from fuel, however, we believe that a sudden and short time frame ban is against our member's interests.

ANDRA Technical and Management are working with The Hon Josh Frydenberg's advisors to put forward a case for a staged reduction of lead in fuel over a longer time period.

 Electrimotion Wireless Shut Down System Trial
 

In recent weeks ANDRA has purchased an Electrimotion wireless shut down system to be trialled at ANDRA member tracks.

With the assistance of Perth Motorplex staff this system will be in place for the test n tune held at the track prior 46th Westernationals 4th and 5th March 2017.

We are aware that a number of competitors already have the receiver fitted to vehicles and will be able take part in the trial.

 National Rules Committee Meeting

On the weekend of the 11th & 12th February the National Rules Committee met in Adelaide and worked its way through in excess of one hundred rule proposals, clarifications and tidy ups.

This process is an important and valuable part of the ANDRA structure, with all proposals now being written up for presentation to the Division Directors in a few weeks.

Please be advised of the latest ANDRA National Records set thsi past weekend in Mildura.

 

First Modified National Records Set in 21 Months

Two new Modified Eliminator National Records were set at Round 3 of the Summit Racing Equipment Sportsman Series at Mildura Sunset Strip. 

Running over the 1/8 mile, both ends of the A/MD National Record were set by two separate drivers: Simon Barlow (ET) and Leanne Braggs (mph). 

Barlow pushed the ET record to 4.45 seconds in qualifying to best the previous minimum set at 4.49. 

Braggs clocked 154.69 mph in qualifying surpassing the previous mark of 152.82 mph set by Jayden Talbot at South Coast Raceway in January 2015. 

ANDRA congratulates both teams on setting the first Modified Eliminator National Records over any distance since Jayden Talbot 21 months ago.
