Historic Rebels go three from three

The Melbourne Rebels have secured a club record third consecutive victory with a 33-10 victory over the Brumbies at AAMI Park in Melbourne on Friday.

A double from Reece Hodge, along with tries from Amanaki Mafi, Jack Maddocks and Michael Ruru, helped the Rebels maintain their unbeaten start to the 2018 Vodafone Super Rugby campaign.

The Brumbies were in a gallop straight out of the gates to dominated early territory and possession.

Under enormous pressure and starved of the ball, Tom English’s leadership was tested early in his first game as captain as the Rebels conceded five penalties in the opening nine minutes which led to the sin-binning of hooker Jordan Uelese.

With their tails up, the visitors immediately struck less than a minute later when a long ball from flyhalf Christian Lealiifano found Chance Peni on the wing, who was able to beat the defender to open the scoring.

English settled the troops as the Rebels found their grit and determination in defence in a gutsy nine minutes to nullify the reigning Australian Conference champions.

The Rebels hit the lead in the 28th minute with a converted try when Mafi crashed through the Brumbies defensive line to plant the ball at the base of the Yakult goal post pad after a barnstorming run from the scrum. Hodge made no mistake with the conversion from in front.

Mafi put in another dominant shift at The Stockade to finish the game with 91 metres from 17 carriers, five tackle busts, a line break and a try assist to complement his second try in two games.

The hosts doubled their advantage four minutes after when a slick cut out pass from Will Genia put Hodge over for his first try of the game and sent the Rebels into the half-time break with a 14-5 lead.

The Brumbies cut their deficit to four points after the restart when quick hands and an inside ball put Henry Speight through the defence to score for the visitors and make it a 14-10 game in the 55th minute.

After a physical and tense opening hour, the Rebels capitalised on the man advantage after a yellow card to Leslie Leuluaialii-Makin in the 62nd minute with three tries in six minutes to put the result beyond doubt.

Genia and Hodge combined again for the inside centre’s second try of the game in the 65th minute before Maddocks bagged his fourth try in two games after a neat flick out the back from Mafi put the winger down the right side to make it 28-10.

The bench sealed the club’s third straight bonus point victory when Richard Hardwick, in his Rebels debut, dashed 35 metres through the midfield before he found Ruru in support for his first career Super Rugby try in the 71st minute.

Melbourne Rebels 33 (Hodge 2, Mafi, Maddocks, Ruru tries; Hodge 4 cons) defeated Brumbies 10 (Peni, Speight)

Rebels kick-off new era with bonus point win

The Melbourne Rebels have kicked-off their 2018 Vodafone Super Rugby campaign with a bonus point victory over the Queensland Reds courtesy of a 45-19 win at AAMI Park in Melbourne on Friday.

The Rebels couldn’t have asked for a better start to their new era under Head Coach Dave Wessels as the hosts ran in seven-tries-to-three in front of 10,021 boisterous fans to start the season.

Doubles to new recruit Dane Haylett-Petty, flyhalf Jack Debreczeni and winger Sefa Naivalu, along with a helper from Tom English, saw the Rebels record their largest ever Super Rugby score and equal the club’s largest winning margin.

The season opener reached boiling point in just the ninth minute when Reds skipper Scott Higginbotham was shown a red card against his former side for a dangerous tackle on Matt Philip.

After missing the pre-season trial matches with a back injury, new recruit Will Genia impressed in his first outing for the club as his speed, game management and sublime skill capitalised on the man advantage.

Rebels captain Adam Coleman led from the front to settle his new-look side as the hosts found their composure after a scrappy start to the game.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, the Reds broke the deadlock midway through the first half when the loose ball bounced into the arms of Duncan Paia’aua to score untouched under the posts.

Genia’s debut was nearly ended early when Lukhan Tui was shown a yellow card in the 23rd minute for a dangerous tackle on the scrumhalf which saw the visitors down to 13 men for 10 minutes.

The Rebels capitalised on the advantage just two minutes later when Lopeti Timani found Naivalu free on the left wing with a cut out pass to score the first of his two tries for the night.

The Reds responded in the 28th minute when Chris Feauai-Sautia drove through the Rebels defence to offload to a rampaging Samu Kerevi who crossed to give his side a 14-7 lead after James Tuttle converted the try.

The Rebels levelled the scores 10 minutes before the break when a penalty and quick tap from Genia had the Reds reeling on their goal line before English crashed through the defence to make it 14-14.

The hosts took the lead for the first time in the match in the 34th minute when good vision and a wide ball from Jack Maddocks found Naivalu all alone on the wing to complete his double.

The Rebels struck again on the stroke of half-time when Genia and English combined to put Haylett-Petty over for his first try in Rebels colours and send the hosts to half-time with a 26-14 advantage.

The Rebels picked up where they left off two minutes after the restart as Genia orchestrated another try with a precise pass to find Jack Debreczeni, who dummied right to run through for his first try of the night. Debreczeni converted to extend the Rebels lead to 33-14.

A long-range intercept try from Haylett-Petty in the 47th minute saw the Rebels equal the club’s previous record of six tries in a single Super Rugby match.

The club record was broken when Debreczeni crossed for his side’s seventh try of the night in the 55th minute to cap off 38 unanswered points and seal the bonus point victory for the Rebels.

The Reds scored a late consolation try through Chris Feaaui-Sautia in the 67th minute but the night belonged to the Rebels.

Melbourne Rebels 45 (Naivalu 2, D.Haylett-Petty 2, Debreczeni 2, English tries; Debreczeni 5 cons) defeated Queensland Reds 19 (Paia’aua, Kerevi, Feaaui-Sautia tries; Tuttle 2 cons)

AUSTRALIAN SQUADS FINALISED FOR 2018 VODAFONE SUPER RUGBY SEASON
FEBRUARY 21, 2018
Following months of anticipation, the 2018 Vodafone Super Rugby season is upon us with the action set to kick off in Australia this weekend.

Across the four Australian teams 156 players have been signed to the 2018 season including 22 fresh faces who are in line to make their Super Rugby debut.

Each Australian team will also welcome back a stellar line up of experienced players with 21 of them set to celebrate a career landmark of either 50 or 100 Super Rugby caps during the season.

The Australian Conference kicks off in just two sleeps when the Melbourne Rebels go head to head with the Queensland Reds this Friday night at AAMI Park (7.45pm AEDT kick off).

New Rebels Head Coach David Wessels has a strong squad at his disposal with 13 Qantas Wallabies stars including Will Genia, Reece Hodge and Dane Haylett-Petty.

The squad also features Japan’s powerful number 8 Amanaki Mafi and former England lock Geoff Parling.

Newly appointed Captain Adam Coleman will be putting the Rebels jersey on for the first time alongside 16 others including Matt Philip and Jermaine Ainsley. At the ripe age of 26, Coleman has 48 Super Rugby caps under his belt together with 20 international appearances for the Wallabies.

The Rebels will face some tough interstate competition, going up against the Reds who are ready to fire under new Head Coach Brad Thorn.

Thorn has recruited 10 new players – seven being selected from the Queensland Country squad following their remarkable 2017 season which saw them win their first NRC Grand Final.

Included in that list is Wallabies Spring Tour development player Liam Wright, NRC leading try scorer Filipo Daugunu and NSW Country Eagles hooker Brandon Paenga-Amosa.

Adding to this, 20 Reds players have been retained from the 2017 squad including Wallabies Lukhan Tui, Izack Rodda, Samu Kerevi, James Slipper, George Smith, Taniela Tupou and Captain Scott Higginbotham.

Higginbotham will be the 117th Captain to lead the Reds and brings with him a wealth of experience following 123 Super Rugby games and 34 Tests for Australia.

Following this match, the Brumbies who were Australia’s 2017 Conference Champions, will open their season in Tokyo on Saturday against the Sunwolves (3.15pm AEDT kick off).

The Canberra-based squad will welcome back Wallaby David Pocock following a break from Australian Rugby. The powerful back-rower will lead the forward pack alongside a lineup of fresh faces including Mees Erasmus, Richie Arnold, Isi Naisarani, Lachie McCaffrey and Folau Fainga’a.

Head Coach Dan McKellar will also have 13 Wallabies and international stars to call on including Tevita Kuridrani, Scott Sio and Henry Speight.

Co-Captain Christian Lealiifano is ready to lead the squad alongside fellow Wallaby Sam Carter. Lealiifano recently re-joined the side from Top 14 outfit Ulster after overcoming his battle with leukaemia.

Later that night, Australia’s most recent Super Rugby champions, the Waratahs, will begin their quest for a second title against the Stormers at Allianz Stadium (7.45pm AEDT kick off).

The ‘Tahs boast a star-studded line up of Wallabies including Captain Michael Hooper, Kurtley Beale, Bernard Foley and Israel Folau.

It’s set to be another big year for the inspirational Hooper with the 26-year-old to lead the side for a fourth successive season.

Beale has returned to Sydney following a stint for Wasps in the English Premiership while lock Rob Simmons has made his way south following nine seasons in Queensland.

Head Coach Daryl Gibson has also introduced 10 new recruits to his 40-man squad including Tom Staniforth, Curtis Rona and Alex Newsome.

Every match will be broadcast live on FOX Sports and once again Network Ten will replay a feature match free to air nationally every Sunday morning at 8am on ONE.

Rebels welcome back experience for final trial

The Melbourne Rebels have named an extended 30-player team ahead of the club’s final trial match against the NSW Waratahs at Brookvale Oval in Sydney on Thursday.

Rebels Head Coach Dave Wessels has included new captain Adam Coleman and internationals Jermaine Ainsley, Lopeti Timani, Reece Hodge, Sefa Naivalu and Amanaki Mafi for their first appearances of 2018.

The trial will mark the first occasion for new recruits Coleman, Ainsley and substitute Ross Haylett-Petty to pull on the Rebels jersey ahead of next weekend’s season opener against the Queensland Reds at AAMI Park.

Prop Tetera Faulkner, hooker Jordan Uelese, lock Matt Philip and flanker Angus Cottrell have retained their spots in the starting line-up following the Rebels’ first trial match of the year against the Brumbies last weekend.

Scrumhalf Michael Ruru will partner Jack Debreczeni in the halves after the experienced flyhalf was promoted to the starting line-up for the final trial match while Jack Maddocks and Naivalu will occupy the wings and Dane Haylett-Petty at fullback.

Wessels and the club’s medical staff have opted for a cautious approach to the final trial with Will Genia (back), Marika Koroibete (knee) and Richard Hardwick (knee) given more time to overcome their injuries.

The Rebels finalise their trial phase of the pre-season on Thursday as preparations wrap up ahead of the 2018 Vodafone Super Rugby season.

QUOTES: Dave Wessels, Rebels Head Coach

On the Rebels squad for the trial match:

“The trial against the Waratahs will be an important opportunity to get some more rugby into our legs and an opportunity for our international players to build those new connections in a live fire competitive environment. We want to see players competing hard and putting their hand up for Round One selection next weekend,” Wessels.

On the trial against the Waratahs:

“We’ve got some very clear objectives heading into this final trial against the Waratahs. We learnt some harsh but valuable lessons in our first trial against the Brumbies so I want to see everything that we’ve been working hard on put into practice against the Waratahs,” Wessels said.

QUOTES: Dane Haylett-Petty, Rebels fullback

On being selected for the trial match at fullback:

“After a long and hard pre-season, it’s nice to be back playing competitive rugby again, even if it’s a trial game. Our trial against the Brumbies identified a few areas of our game that needed attention so we’ve worked hard over the last week. Being our last trial game before Round 1, we need to see some improvement as we continue to build towards our first game of the season against the Reds next weekend,” Haylett-Petty said.
