There were only a handful of countries set to participate, among them France, Germany, Italy and Greece, in just four boat classes. Philip Doyle burst onto the international rowing scene with success in the men’s double sculls at the 2019 World Rowing Championships. Doyle had been racing at university and club level. Then in 2018 he was paired with Ronan Byrne and the duo clicked.
In 24 days time the Tokyo 2020 Olympic rowing regatta was due to start. At 8:30am on Friday 24 July, before the opening ceremony had even taken place, the best men’s single scullers in the world would have begun racing in their heats. Just over a month after this the Paralympic Games was due to start. The Covid-19 pandemic changed all of this. Tokyo 2020 will now take place a year from now.
While many parts of the world were in lockdown, a staggering 131 World Records were broken on a Concept2 indoor machine.
