#F4AU Queensland - Sunday Wrap - Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad For Hayek

Harry Hayek has become the fourth different driver in four weekends to win a round of the 2016 CAMS Jayco Australian Formula 4 Championship.

After securing his first U Race It Pole Position and Race One win yesterday at Queensland Raceway, another win in Sunday’s Race 3 capped off a successful return to Australia for Hayek after a brief stint in British F4.

“First overall for the round, I feel sick in the tummy I don’t know what to say!” a stunned Hayek said.

“I’m so blessed to be with BRM. They’ve just given me an awesome car. Wow – what a race! I’m just, yeah, speechless.”

Championship leader Will Brown was content to score ahead of his championship rivals Nick Rowe and Jordan Love, with 2nd in Race Three also enough to conclude the weekend 2nd overall.

“We got a great start, was able to get behind Harry. We’re sort of getting closer a bit there, but the car missed a gear and we lost a bit of ground. Harry put some great laps in towards the end, gapped us by a little bit,” Brown said.

“Jordan [Love] and Nick [Rowe] are the ones in the championship, and was able to extend the lead on them this weekend. It puts us into a better position leading into the next few rounds.”

Sydney Motorsport Park round winner Nick Rowe was third overall in his AGI Sport machine, also pleased to be consistently in a points scoring position but will be eager to close the gap to championship rival Brown.

“I can’t thank AGI Sport enough they did an awesome job with the car all weekend,” Rowe said.

“Probably just a little bit off all weekend, didn’t get it quite perfect. We’ll fight back, Sandown’s a few months away we’ll work hard and get back into this championship race and fight against Will.”

Rowe was however thrilled for his friend Hayek to claim his maiden overall race weekend victory in Australian Formula 4 at Queensland Raceway, which was also the sight of his first podium appearance in the 2015 CAMS Jayco Australian Formula 4 Championship.

“Happy for Harry. Couldn’t happen to a better bloke!” Rowe said.

Rowe’s AGI Sport/SCT Logistics teammate Jack Smith enjoyed a much improved weekend, with a string of consistent top five finishes awarding the local Queenslander the Burson Auto Parts Rookie of the Round award.

“Got a couple of P5s yesterday,” Smith said.

“Today we made a few mistakes, lost a few positions but we got the two fifths yesterday and got first rookie, so it’s been a good weekend.”

Smith and his AGI Sport teammate started their homework a week early, opting to claim an in-season test at Queensland Raceway prior to the Ipswich SuperSprint.

“We did a test day last week, so I learnt the track pretty well last week. We got into it pretty early, been pretty consistent all weekend,” Smith said.

The next and penultimate round of the 2016 CAMS Jayco Australian Formula 4 Championship takes place at Victoria’s Sandown Raceway, as part of the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship, on September 16–18.
