Basketball originated in Greece in 1918 by the YMCA and, especially, the "house of the soldier." Then, at the stadium of Athens YMCA, first played basketball in Greece. Some members, including Mike Stergiadis, who was a student of Naismith in Springfield, took two chairs, the cemented upside down on two walls and a football first played basketball. The YMCA made sure to spread the sport in schools and clubs, while began to organize and games. Indeed, 1920 was held in Izmir and the first tournament involving five teams and the winner was Panionios. These tournaments continued until 1924 and began to take part students and pupils.
The YMCA of Athens in 1924 organized a league, AEK won. If this is seen as a first, AEK is the first champion of Athens.
Essentially, however, the official term for the Greek basketball begins in 1927, when the Athletics Federation established the first Technical Committee basketball composed by Apostolos Nikolaidis, Nikolaos Lorenz, George meadow, Dimitri Constantinos Lezo and goodies. Two years later organized the first championship. Took part in the Pan, the National Ath., The N. Byron, the YMCA, AEK, the Academy and Panionios. Champion became the Panhellenic. The Near East was declared champion in Athens in 1930 and that year he organized the first national championship in Thessaloniki. On the side of the center attended the Near East and Panionios. Thessaloniki representing the 'Aris, and occupied the first position, and the YMCA (finished second). The Near East confirmed the success of the next two years, while in Thessaloniki YMCA took the reigns of the ''ri.
In 1932 appeared the group University of Athens, who played an important role in the development of the sport in the prewar period. He won the championship in 1933 and 1934, but resigned the next year due to disagreements with the director of the university gym. The Panhellenic crowned champion Greece, while the impressions wins Hercules has the ranks of the tallest players (Dwarf, Mantopoulos). The University created a remarkable team again won the championship in 1936 Athens, but did not take part in the nationwide, held in Thessaloniki. Replaced by the Near East, which won the league and Greece.
The following year, the University took precedence in the final winning the Near East. The team Kaisarianis is the first in the history of the Greek American basketball player used. He was professor of Worlds, who worked at Athens College. In the last years of the prewar period, impressed his team Panhellenic, who won three times in succession the title. However, unsuitable land and the system of the championship, which required teams to give the same day three or four matches, were a limiting factor.
before the war and were the first two matches of the national team, with opponents away Turkey and Egypt. Indeed, the meeting took place in Istanbul in indoor parquet, something new for the Greek team. During the Occupation, informally organized in Athens, Piraeus, Thessaloniki and Patras and young athletes appeared. Players of the Panhellenic created one of their own group, which they called "Milo" and claimed the championship by Sporting. The ground is now fertile for the emergence of Greek basketball and the public ready for fights with large groups. The courts are proving inadequate to accommodate the growing crowd of spectators and teams learn new tactics of the American basketball teams.
The second feature of the postwar period was the Greek basketball teams prevalence of major football clubs, which broke the brackets only team Panhellenic. The first post-war championship was held in 1945 and Panathinaikos won the title. Since 1949 began to organize tournaments in other cities, such as Patras, Rhodes and Halkida, where distinguished groups of Skagiopouleiou of AEN and Tritona.Apo 1951 began the sovereignty of the Hellenic, thanks to successes was one of the best teams in Europe. The period up to 1957 was marked by the presence of the Hellenic, which are made up of five players and national omada.Tote began and the first signings to European clubs. The Stefanidis, the Matthew and Mourouzis went to Italy, while Roubanis after the Olympic Games in Melbourne attended American University.
The first regulations
were first implemented in 1929 by Louis Ries, professor of physical education HAN. He, in 1934, implemented in Greece and international regulations. However, despite considerable activity was basketball in Greece, international competitions came to Istanbul in 1936 and since 1934 there had been a failed attempt for a friendly match with Italy.
Milon 1939, located in Egypt, contacted the Sporting and created a team that was represented at the 1940 Games in Egypt. These two groups, Milon and Sporting, offered in many Greek basketball, especially in technical matters.
