WATTS WINS HOME TRACK 40TH ANNIVERSARY EVENT
Mitch Watts did his home club of Leeton proud when on April the 30th he went on to defeat his
father in law and current Victorian champion Ross Maclean in a last lap pass as he crossed the line in
first place on a special 40th anniversary race night, Maclean second and Dave Walton finished in
third place.
With big events on the program for Super Sedans & Production Sedans the Goulburn Ovens Sedan
Association played the third string role on the card and in reality had the closest finish of the night in
their final.
Watts (# 54 Ace Smash Repairs – Commodore) began the evening in heat one with a victory over
Frank Gordon, Wally Dewar, Walton & Maclean. A six lap race on the 917 metre long track finished
with just over two and a half seconds between first and second at the finish line. Scott Callander
finished in seventh ahead of Mark Pollard, Jamie Atkins & Stuart Balins whilst Mick Pettit (# 6 MP
Sheds – Commodore), Mick Quinn & Mark Gordon were all non-finishers.
Off the front row Callander (# 24 Jindera Automotive – Falcon) took the early lead in heat two and
after starting from position four it took Maclean until lap three to hit the front and go on to record
the fastest time for a heat race for the night with six laps done in two minutes 58.732 seconds.
Watts moved ahead of Callander & into second on lap five finishing just over three seconds behind
Maclean (# 1 Macleans Storage Corowa – Commodore). Pettit was fourth with Walton, Frank
Gordon, Pollard, Dewar, Quinn, Atkins & Mark Gordon a lap down finishing behind the winner. Balins
didn’t finish.
Making it two wins in the heat races and securing pole position for the final, Maclean took the lead
from Pollard (# 18 BB Freight – Commodore) on lap two, Pollard held strong in second until lap five
when he spun in turn one and out of the race.
Watts assumed second place behind Maclean after starting back in seventh place, Pettit moved into
third with Walton (# 43 Maverick Boats – Centura) & Callander from the very back of the field next in
line as Maclean took the .742 of a second win. Quinn finished in sixth spot with Dewar, Atkins &
Balins the others to finish. Frank Gordon missed the start and Mark Gordon (# 91 Menzplant –
Commodore) who had a new engine in the car was having issues which didn’t allow him to start the
first heat either.
A ten lap final at Brobenah Raceway Leeton is like a twenty to twenty two lap final at most other
regular size speedways & the drivers thrilled the crowd, especially Maclean & Watts out front.
Maclean got the lead on lap one from Watts, Callander held onto third place with Walton chasing.
On lap seven Walton moved into third ahead of Callander, Mark Gordon dropped out of the race yet
again with his engine not right whilst earlier in the final Quinn (# 17 KMA Signs – Commodore)
copped a whack from Mark Gordon and that put him out of the race.
On the very last lap Watts took the lead in front of parochial home crowd to bring his Leeton
registered race car to a win with Maclean just .088 of a second behind. The race went green to
chequered flag without a stop and a four minute and 50.544 second race time. Walton was third five
seconds back with Callander, Frank Gordon, Dewar, Pettit, Pollard, Atkins & Balins (# 22 QA Kitchens
– Commodore) the finishers.

TRY AS THEY MIGHT, STRUTS COULDN’T KNOCK JOHNSON OUT
Former Western Australian Modified Sedan champion Broome's Mick Johnson has had an up a down
season so far in what is fast becoming the premier division to be in around the national & much of
the variation in his performance comes down to recent changes the team made in order to try and
advance themselves up the rung to mix it with the nation’s best in big events over in the east of
Australia.
A change to a 3.6L Alloy Tec motor has not gone particularly smooth so far with a loss of power &
torque that the driver was used to from the other engine. The first Western Australian series round
with the new engine at Collie a week before Christmas proved tough as Johnson's machine broke
two struts & struggled with less power as Johnson came away with seventh from fifteen starters &
work to do.
After re-panelling the car, making a differential change and re-making strut mountings for the title,
Johnson & the team hit the track for practice however still had difficulty with the engine, a removal
of weight from the car helped free it up, however the strut issue returned on an otherwise smooth
track, bending two front struts the team had just fitted during practice.
It became a busy night after practice to be ready for the next day’s racing as the team went back to
their struts that broke at Collie that had just been repaired & returned to the team prior to the title.
To fit them it meant re-scaling the car at the track, not something drivers like to do especially when
it was the first of three times they did that over the weekend!
Racing finally got underway with a fourth place start in heat one being converted to a third whilst
the driver after the race told the crew he needed more revs, a change of tyres and a shock
adjustment done before heat two.
A third position start in heat two quickly became a lead in the first two laps with Johnson stretching
to a four car buffer before the right hand front strut leg broke in half and the wheel collapsed on
what was otherwise a smooth track. Johnson received fifth place points with as he dropped out of
the front running with a very bent adjustable strut insert.
Before the third heat the car had to be re-scaled with the team needing to run a strut that hadn’t
been set up with the car changes, the crew worked fast & the interval giving them some extra time
to put the car back in running order with a less than ideal front strut that would change the car
handling.
Johnson then started in pole position for the third heat & just couldn’t get the same turn in with the
car as he had early in heat two hurting the entry & exit speed of the car & leaving the car & driver
dropping back to third.
Next up was a new plan in the pits to formulate the remaining good strut from the left hand front to
be adjusted to a right hand front & stronger housing was organised to be made the following day.
Trev from the crew then took off on Sunday to ex Modified Sedan driver and current WA # 2 Street
Stock driver Paul Briggs Collie workshop to re make a stronger strut leg whilst the team checked all
the front end alignments and angles, fitted a spare strut to the left hand corner to allow the left
hand strut that was there to be fitted in to the right hand corner. Then it was time to scale the car up
for the third time!
A great result in the fourth & final heat race when Johnson from seventh worked through to third
with the car handling good again, the heat include a couple battles with defending champ Aiden
Trewern and then Ray Clifton to finish a close 3rd.
After a calculation of points Johnson qualified ninth for the title race with some quick cars ahead.
Preparing for the feature Johnson found the right rear shock had lost its rebound adjustment and
was jammed, this was quickly changed out for the spare and re set to where it should be, crew also
prepped the feature tyres with a little advice from fellow Broome racer and current WA 1 and OZ 1
Late Model Sedan champ Kodee Brown.
Johnson’s race started well. Two passing lines developed & Johnson was able to capitalise on this to
pass Miranda Ball on the first lap, then wait for some grip to work into the tyres, passing Adam
Houston on lap eight, before having a great battle with Neville Mansted and Blake Watson passing
Watson and Allan Mortimer on lap fifteen and Mansted on lap twenty then Mick Hamon on twenty
one moving Johnson into third place as Aiden Trewern withdrew with power steer failure.
A restart with 10 to go put Johnson on the back of Sean Theyer and Matt Noakes, as Johnson made
a ripping re start and picked off Theyer after two laps and set out after Noakes who had opened up a
gap. Johnson got onto the bumper of Noakes setting the quick time of the feature on lap twenty
nine with a 20.023 with two to go and pushed a little high giving Noakes a slight buffer, on the white
flag lap before chasing Noakes to the finish in second.
Johnson was delighted with the podium finish. "I'm very happy to finish on the podium, it’s been a
very frustrating month so it was great to reward the crew Team Banjup Trev, Di & Gav and the
sponsors with a strong finish. I can't thank everybody enough for all their work tonight & last night
with all the changes we need to go through. Thank you to Brigga for letting us get some work done
at his place & well done to Collie Speedway for a great weekend & Noakesy for the win , a special
thanks to my missus BJ, who allows me so much time to do what I love as she takes care of the kids
when I go away." shared Johnson.

NSW GRAND PRIX MIDGET CLUB EXCITED FOR NATIONAL TITLE
This Saturday night February the 6th the NSW Grand Prix Midget Club &
Goulburn Speedway Club host the national title for Grand Prix Midgets at
what is the NSW GP Midget club’s home track & the locals cannot wait to
get on track & keep the title in their home state.
Seven New South Wales drivers will compete against six Victorians with
the home club drivers including Cory Tatarko, Stuart McMahon, Keiran
Macklyn & Tyrin Haynes very much looking at having standout
performances in front of local friends and family.
Sydneysiders Scot Moir, Janelle Saville & Ron Scheers Jnr don’t mind if
they take the title back home with them to the big smoke whilst the
Victorian contingent has brothers Paul & Trevor Perry, Lisa Chalcraft &
Louis Rodriguez all from the Goulburn Valley, Geelong’s Chris Fowler &
Melbourne racer Jason Crawford with plans to spoil the party.
Pundits in the media and on the hill believe that the best chances of a
victory or podiums in this title include Goulburn’s Cory Tatarko. Tatarko
currently leads the NSW point score having won every feature race so far
this season.
Scott Moir being a previous winner (2006) is always a chance & if he has
overcome mechanical issues that have plagued his racing this season then
he is likely to figure in the results, whilst also having mechanical issues is
Janelle Saville whose Father, Brother and Uncle have all won the title and
if her and her car owner can get on top of those on race night she is a
proven big time racer.
Almost all the top Victorian drivers have entered this meeting and there is
no doubt that Jason Crawford in the Mark Shiells owned machine will be
figuring in the final tussle, however Trevor Perry is the driver with most
experience at Goulburn having competed there this season more than
once to get used to every nook and cranny only to finish behind Tatarko.
Fowler, Rodriguez, Chalcraft & Paul Perry are proven more than capable
drivers behind the wheel and would have set themselves at worst result a
podium finish as a goal whilst they might be considered dark horses when
it comes to being out of the top four chances.
Other dark horses for the title win from New South Wales include Keiran
Macklyn who has been switching between another division of competition
and the Midgets this season, mind you as has Rodriguez another New
South Wales dark horse is Stu McMahon who won races towards the end
of last season and has started strongly this year.
Grand Prix Midget New South Wales secretary Ian Emslie shares his
thoughts on what should be a very close title event. “The last few
Australian titles have seen one or two drivers totally dominate the whole
night, however this year I believe we have the tightest field ever & any
one of five or six drivers could take the number one plate home. I’m
really looking forward to seeing this year’s event.”

AUSTRALIAS NUMBER ONE IS CROWNED KING OF THE MOUNT IN FLOORLESS DISPLAY
An outright favourite for this seasons Australian Street Stock title was hard to decipher leading up to
this weekend, however South Australian Anthony Beare went along way to putting that debate to
bed when he won all three of his heats (including a rear of field start), a top nine shoot out & led all
forty laps in the Ipta Fibreglass King of the Mount feature event clean sweeping the weekend at
Mount Buninyong’s Redline Raceway.
Beare was too good for 50 plus other drivers despite a late charge from home club member Mick
Dann who some say, needed just a couple more laps to get in front of the winner.
In other events on the night Garry Kakoschke the Victorian Marsh Modified Champion won the
feature in his division & Redline member Tim Hutchinson won the VSC Open Sedan feature.
The Street Stocks completed eighteen heat races before getting into a C Main, B Main & Feature
race. In first round heats Mick Dann, Darren Giacometti, Dale Blomeley, Morris Ahearn, Anthony
Beare & Steve Gartner.
Phil Pottage began round two heats with a win before Beare notched up his second, then Lenny
Bates, Cade Cox, Giacometti matching it with Beare also taking a second heat win & Jason Degoldi
won the last of the round. In this round after leading Beare for a handful of laps, Dylan Campton fell
back to second & got tangled up with traffic & ended up on his side with front end & possible engine
damage to his car.
The final round of heats finished with Mark Gartner, Steven Watts whose mother spent time in
intensive care this week, Victorian Champion Brad McClure, Darren Forrest, Beare & Ballarat local
Shaun Henry taking victories.
Jacob Vuillermin won the C Main event transferring with three other competitors into the B Main.
Next up he came from almost last to finish fifth in the last chance B Main to qualify into the main
event with Cory Sandow, Chris Whatmore, Jack Bishop, Bhoe Patterson & Nathan Dunn. This was a
super achievement in such a big field.
The Shoot out to determine the top nine starting positions began with McClure defeating Ahearn,
Henry & Forrest before his run towards the front was cut off by Dann. Bates defeated Dann, then
Degoldi defeated beat Bates, Giacometti beat Degoldi before Beare held onto the top starting
position beating Giacometti.
The twenty laps each direction final began in the clockwise direction with Beare heading straight to
the lead. Giacometti initially had the chase position & McClure & Henry went high along the
concrete to run around a few in the field before Bates took up the chase of Beare.
McClure may have felt he received the wrong end of the stick when was spun twice & thinking the
race would be pulled up by a caution period continued on in both occasions only to wonder if the
steward’s fingers were stuck in their pockets.
Dann, Bates & Matt Nelson were involved in a great scrap amongst themselves to try and hold that
key spot of second in the hope of getting a clear shot at Beare for the win. Nelson put Bates under
pressure & snatched third place to get the better of the battle between those two.
In the run to the finish line in the second twenty laps Dann assumed the chase role after getting past
Bates & as the field bunched up again after a Shaun Henry spin, Dann had a sniff and chased hard &
just needed a couple more laps to catch Beare.
Beare was crowned the King of the Mountain with Dann, Nelson, Steve Gartner & Bates rounding
out the top five.
Kakoschke ran out start to finish winner ahead of Mark Ansaldi, Chris Graetz, Brian Graetz & Greg
Knight in the Marsh Modified Sedan feature event. Earlier Nash Harris before suffering a night
ending crash won a heat along with Kakoschke & Chris Graetz.
The Open Sedans final was a cracking race between Nathan Fawns in a car supplied by his mate
Darren Nelson just in front of Hutchinson for much of the feature race before skipping away a little
through traffic. Fawns felt the car go off & since it was not his machine decided to park it instead of
risking damage & Hutchinson assumed the lead and went on to defeat Rahmon Rivero who was
close behind Aaron Bunton, Garry Ainley & Brian Schneider.
Qualifying heats were won by Fawns, Hutchinson, Fawns again & Colin Tate.
Redline Raceway returns to action on December the 12th with the Late Model Sedans & the visiting
Grand Prix Midgets & Division 2 Hot Rod Sedans.

LATE MODEL SEDANS RIP UP RUSHWORTH: PEARSON WINS
Shortly after 10pm on Saturday, the Whroo Forrest shook with the awesome roar of 10,000
horse-power as a field of immaculate Late Model Sedan monsters were let loose on
Rushworth Speedway.
A comprehensive field of fourteen Late Models presented at the Goulburn Valley Auto
Club’s Rushworth Speedway on Saturday 21st November, to provide one of the most
memorable and action-packed finals witnessed for a long time.
With entrants from Canberra, South Australia, NSW and New Zealand joining the Victorian
contingent, there was hot competition in this opening round of the Late Models Racing
Victoria Championship point’s chase. Heats were broken into two divisions, with twelve
starters on the final grid for the 25 lap battle.
Sharing the front row of the final were ACT’s Scott McPherson and veteran Victorian driver
Graham Forte. Completing the top six were Steve Vaughan, Justin Pearson, Chevy Edwards
and Ross Nicastri. Mick Hetherington did not make the finals, opting to save further damage
to a sick engine.
When the green dropped, the race did not progress past turn one, as a spin involving Brock
Edwards and Fiona Verhoeven brought out the yellow flag. Unfortunately Forte retired at
this stage, and took no further part in the hostilities. A complete restart from original
positions saw McPherson lead from Vaughan and Pearson, until turn one claimed another
victim, and a further restart. Chevy Edwards was out on lap five, followed by Cameron
Pearson on lap nine.
Another spin by Kristen Vermeulen brought out the yellow yet again, and she retired on lap
six. This time it was Vaughan who took over the lead from Justin Pearson, with the two
making a 50 metre break on the rest of the field. Pearson soon responded by taking back
the lead from Vaughan, and that was the way that they lead all to way to the chequered
flag.
Meantime, Chevy Edwards had retired to the infield, to be followed shortly after by
Pearson. This was becoming a race of attrition in the mid-field. Nicastri moved up to briefly
take position three before retiring on lap eleven, to be followed out by Wayne Belk just two
laps later.
Now there were six!
Things got even more exciting as the leaders worked their way through the tail-enders, with
some front-runners losing ground as they attempted to find an inside line on the slower
cars, rather than immediately going around.
Final positions were Justin Pearson, Steve Vaughan and Brendan Hucker on the podium,
followed by Scott McPherson, Kristen Vermeulen and Brock Edwards. Scott McPherson
posted the fastest lap time of 16.58 seconds around Rushworth’s 440 metre (on pole line)
track.
Support feature was the V8 Dirt Modifieds, and a small but determined group of just six cars
provided great entertainment, which was appreciated by the large crowd. Steve Milthorpe
claimed a clear victory over Darren Clarke with Brett Clarke in third place.
None of the club classes had feature events to compete in however there was plenty of
interest in the GV Production Sedans, with starters being again split into two divisions.
Amongst the strong performers were Daniel Wilson with a fine performance with two wins,
with Bevan Hutchins and Warren Alexander & Ricky Rodda finally has the big Valiant firing,
with the top five on points for the meeting being Wilson out on top, Rodda, Hutchins,
Alexander & Scott Smith as a result of the no feature event situation.
GV Open Saloons began with the current GV1 Phil Lamb and GV2 Paul Lamb drivers finishing
in the first event, in those positions followed by Keith Simmonds. Adam Box was doing well
until he incurred the displeasure of the Chief Steward after attempting an inside pass on a
lapped car, causing a collision.
In race two, it was Michael Wicks driving a Falcon who proved that the “Lambinator” was
not indeed invincible. Peter Fitzpatrick came home second, with a great drive from Jay
Nicolaisen in the Chalcraft Commodore in third, after also impressing with a fourth spot in
race one.
The points top five were Phil Lamb & Simmonds equal first, then Paul Lamb, Wicks & Jay
Nicolaisen.
Top five on points in Ladies Sedans were Chloe Lamb, Jacquie Fitzpatrick, Jacki Shephard,
Belinda Chalcraft & Ally Moore and in Junior Sedans Thomas Conboy, Kodye Basten, Ricky
Clarke, Josh Cecil & Maddy Nadort.
Due to track preparation issues & concerns, the club spent some time working on the race
surface during racing which resulted in the loss of some events. In an appropriate gesture
recognising the paying public deserved compensation, spectators have received a discount
invitation to another race meetings & the volunteers were able to produce a race track to
hold the feature event the public came to see.
The next BIG meeting at Rushworth Speedway will be on Saturday December 12th, with the
running of the Victorian Compact Speedcar Championships.

AUSTRALIAN CHAMPION WINS MODIFIEDS AT ALEXANDRA SPEEDWAYimages by Inaction Photos - Car 1 is Mark Carlin
Current Australian Modified Sedan Champion Geelong’s Mark Carlin has won the kick of event for
the season in the ‘Tritech Lubricants’ Victorian Modified Sedan Series when he led the field to the
finish on Saturday night November 21st with last year’s series champion Rusty Felsovary finishing
second ahead of his father in law in third, Russell Bent.
A packed show also produced wins in National Junior Sedans for Ricky Cornwall, Unlimited Sedans
Healesville’s David Donegan, Russell Hill in Standard Saloons & Lenny Bates in Sports Sedans in
feature races & then Caleb Lincoln VSC Junior Sedans & Sonia Nelson in Open Ladies Sedans.
The Modified Sedans were the major event with club members Matt Nelson & Brody Chrystie
looking to defend their local honour with a great showing & they both did exactly that with things
not quite finishing off the way they liked in the final.
Nelson & Chrystie won both the opening round qualifying races then Felsovary & Ricky Clark won the
second round races. Nelson became the only dual heat race winner with a win in the final round
along with first year driver Kye Walters taking a big win ahead of Carlin in the final heat race.
At the front of the field in the final Nelson & Carlin both held the lead in swapping it four times
between them before the yellow light came out just after the crossed the start finish line for the first
time when Peter McCarthy & Clark crashed in turn three.
At the re-start again Nelson & Carlin went into battle together and behind them a group of drivers
including, Greg Stevenson, Felsovary, Bent, Chrystie & Graham West exchanged third to sixth spots
on a regular basis as the race went on.
Nelson’s car started to breathe smoke out the exhaust and after a couple laps of observation the
stewards called defect on his car and that of Stevenson eliminating the two from the race so that
drivers behind were not left breathing in harmful plumes of smoke as they chased behind.
Having missed the call of defect and the following black flags Nelson chased, caught and passed at
the finish line Carlin, only to be told he is not the winner & Carlin was given the chequered flag to do
a celebratory lap. Felsovary, Bent, Chrystie & West rounded out the top five.
The National Junior Sedans with their 1200cc powered machines also produced a great final
between winner Cornwall, Donald Young who led the race for many laps, Wayne Furmston, Jamie
Burton & Tyler Barton.
Kasey Garlick & Tim Gorski were both in the mix early and both caused stoppages that had stewards
send them to the rear of the field.
Eventually in the closing stages of the final Young’s car suffered mechanical issues and he dropped
out of the result and Cornwall motored on to the win from Furmston, Barton, Burton & Luke Dingley.
Earlier Caleb Lincoln who didn’t start the final, Burton, Garlick, Cornwall, Tim Gorski & Young all won
heat race qualifiers.
The Sports Sedans closed with a great final between the team cars being driven by Lenny Bates &
Brendan Miller. They were way out front of the field and it was always going to be a one – two finish
for them from the start. Andrew Jordan finished third ahead of Daniel Unternahrer & Troy Simspson.
Luke Fallon, Matt Nelson who drove in three divisions on this race night, Bates twice & Miller twice
won heat races.
Donegan was superb in the final of Unlimiteds in his General Motors powered Cortina. A 308ci
engine from the opposition factory seen Donegan blow away Jordan who was doing double divisions
for the night, Fallon, Colin Lincoln & Simpson also doing double duty on the night.
Caleb Lincoln, Russell Hill & Sonia Nelson were all dominate in their racing with the boys winning all
heats and in Hill’s case the final as well whilst Nelson won two of her three heats in the Ladies.
Alexandra Speedway kick off again on December the 5th for a big Standard Saloon feature event
night with all other club classes.

DICKER DELIGHTED WITH TOP THREE RESULT IN QUEENSLAND TITLE
Venturing to Lockyer Valley Speedway in Queensland for the SKAA Queensland titles for Speedway
Karts Ricky Dicker has finally come away with a podium result in the KT100s Modifieds & he could
not be more pleased after all the effort that has been put in to producing one the nations better
looking Speedway Karts.
With a position two start in heat one Dicker had a great opportunity to start the day with a win,
however after running up high Dicker went backwards a fair way before working his way up to
fourth spot to finish, not the ideal result for a front row starting position, however some points
where banked.
Starting from position seven in the second heat Dicker had the worst possible result when he ran out
of tear offs & had to pull infield when he couldn’t see any further in front of him.
Heavy rain then interfered with the nights racing and the third and fourth heats were cancelled
leaving an opportunity when the weather cleared to go straight into the title race.
Dicker started this race in seventh spot & quickly moved forward in the field to lead the race for a
couple laps before slamming into fourth place who he was about to lap & possibly breaking some
toes before racing the next ten laps of the fifteen lap title in pain & holding on to third place for the
KT100s Modifieds behind Brendan Griffiths & Nev Britton.
Dicker who currently also sits in fifth placed in the Victorian Dirt Kart Series also & has another event
coming up was stoked with the result of Queensland # 3. “I have had decent results here & there
over the last few years & this season I have finally got to a level I have wanted to be at consistently,
that’s to be one of the front running KT Modified drivers in Australia. Regardless of what Jamie &
myself spend or don’t spend on this engine we run, I can’t thank Jamie (brother Jamie Dicker)
enough for all his work & thoughts on what we can do with this engine.”
Dicker would like to also thank Jamie Dicker & Courtney Smith for housing his Kart, again Jamie &
Danny Vassal at VRT for the GFR Chassis, Ricky & Bonnies Bed & Breakfast for the hospitality, Tommy
& Graham Keats for the opportunity to travel with the guys around Australia & this time to the
Gatton Showgrounds.
