THUNDER ON HILL 410 SPRINTS & 358 MODIFIEDS SET FOR TUESDAY NIGHT AT GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY

BECHTELSVILLE, Pa. (July 25, 2015) -- As the NAPA Auto Parts Thunder on the Hill Racing Series gears up for one of its biggest events of the season – the Inaugural 410 Sprint Car Thunder Cup at the Grandview Speedway on Tuesday, July 28 (Rain date: July 30) -- the fastest drivers on dirt prepare to do battle on the 1/3 mile dirt high banks, but for Sprint Car hot shoe Ryan Smith of Kunkletown, PA, the excitement of strapping into his Sprint Car in front of a hometown crowd is the real thrill.

“There is nothing like racing in front of your friends and family,” Smith said. “So many of the people in the stands have watched me race for years, and I’m really looking forward to getting back to Grandview and putting on a good show for them.”

Aboard the Warko Group No. 94, the 27-year-old wheelman has spent much of this season running with Tony Stewart’s “All-Star Circuit of Champions” Sprint Car Series -- which travels primarily throughout Ohio and Western Pennsylvania – where he currently sits 8th in the series point standings, with two wins and eight top-5 finishes.  The All-Stars have offered Smith not only a valuable learning experience, but also the opportunity to compete at race tracks that are new to him, both of which have helped him prepare for this Tuesday night at Grandview Speedway.

“The racing at Grandview is so tight and we get so much speed in [410 Sprint] cars, it really is like racing a fighter jet down a hallway,” said Smith.

Smith has his sights set on this Tuesday’s $5,000 top prize and the nearly 20-inch tall gold Thunder Cup Trophy, but a talented contingent of the region’s top Sprint Car aces all have the same goal in mind.  Drivers like Greg Hodnett, Lucas Wolfe, Lance Dewease, Alan Krimes, Billy Dietrich, and Freddie and Brandon Rahmer are all gunning for Thunder on the Hill victories.

Things also continue to heat up for the 358 NASCAR Modifieds. During the “Traffic Jam” event, Oley, PA’s Duane Howard claimed the victory in dominant fashion with Jeff Strunk, Meme Desantis, Jared Umbenhauer, and Doug Manmiller rounding out the top five finishers.  It’s a battle for bragging rights and $3,000 when the mighty Modifieds take to the track in 30 laps of three-wide, wheel-banging, and boiler plate bouncing action.  The 358 Modifieds portion of this show is open to all competitors, with heat race qualifying, a consolation, and a 30-lap feature.

Thunder on the Hill marketing partners have upped the ante for the Inaugural Thunder Cup event, offering competitor bonuses in both the 410 Sprint Car and 358 Modified divisions.

Quaker Steak & Lube is offering a $50 bonus to heat race event winners in both divisions, with the stipulation that they pre-register.

In the 410 Sprint Car division, a $100 Quick Time Bonus is up for grabs with an additional $100 bonus if the track record is broken, $200 is available to a first time Grandview 410 winner, $200 is offered to the highest finishing 360/358/305 Sprint Car, and $125 is offered to all pre-entered cars that don’t qualify for the A-main.

More than $40,000 in cash prizes is on the line for competitors.  In a 35-lap event, the 410 Sprints will chase a lucrative $5,000 to win, $1,000 for tenth position, and $400 to start the event.  The 358 Modifieds will compete in a 30-lap event for a $3,000 top prize, with tenth paying $500 and $300 to start the event.

      NAPA AUTO PARTS PRESENTS. . .  . .

410 SPRINTS & 358 MODIFIEDS IN HUGE DOUBLE HEADER TUESDAY NIGHT,  JUNE 30 AT GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY, GREG HODNETT LOOKS FOR  FIVE THUNDER WINS IN A ROW

It was August of 1990 when the famed Black Bandit No. 19 sat in victory lane at the inaugural NAPA Auto Parts Thunder on the Hill Racing Series event at the Grandview Speedway, Steve Smith Sr. would claim the victory.  Now, twenty-five years later the younger Smith, Stevie Smith looks to pick up his first ever Grandview Speedway win, when the 410 Sprint Cars come to town with the NASCAR 358 Modifieds on Tuesday, June 30th as part of Pennsylvania Sprint Car Speed Week.

Kicking off the 2015 edition of Speed Week in fine fashion, Smith -- the hired gun of 13-time Speed Week Champion, Fred Rahmer – dominated the evening activities setting quick time and leading each of the 25 A-Main laps.  In a victory lane interview, Rahmer was clear that he wanted to claim this year’s Pennsylvania Sprint Speed Week title.   Stevie Smith took the win on Friday night over Greg Hodnett.

But at the Grandview Speedway high banks, stopping Hodnett isn’t going to be an easy task – even for the star-filled field expected to be on the Hill Tuesday night.  Hodnett, has claimed eight total Thunder victories, including the past four 410 Sprint Car feature events at the Bechtelsville, PA oval – something no driver has done in all of Thunder on the Hill Racing Series history.  Hodnett’s ‘drive for five’ is on everyone’s mind, and a Tuesday Night victory for Hodnett would see him tie Rahmer on the Thunder on the Hill All-Time Win list.

While all eyes are on Smith and Hodnett, the door sits wide open for someone to come in and steal the $5,000 top prize – and their first Thunder on the Hill win.  That someone could be Gettysburg, PA’s Danny Dietrich – currently sitting third in the Speed Week Points – Dietrich finished 3rd in Grandview’s event last year.  Other contenders include: Lucas Wolfe, who almost beat Hodnett last year; Brent Marks, who currently sits 5th in Speed Week points and finished 4th in the 2014 Grandview race; and Alan Krimes, who has a string of top-5 finishes in Grandview sprint car events.  Krimes has been so close to winning to that first Thunder on the Hill victory, they can almost taste it.  Other entries include Ryan Smith, Lance Dewease, JJ Grasso, Aaron Ott, Brady Bacon, Davey Sammons, Brian Carber,  Freddie and Brandon Rahmer, Tim Glatfelter and Ryan Talor.

The 35 Lap 410 Sprint Car event pays $5,000 to win, $1,400 for fifth position, $1,000 for tenth position and $400 to start the feature event.

Things continue to heat up for the 358 NASCAR Modifieds – during the Traffic Jam event Oley, PA’s Duane Howard claimed the victory in dominant fashion with Jeff Strunk, Meme Desantis, Jared Umbenhauer and Doug Manmiller rounding out the top five finishers.  It’s a battle for bragging rights and $3,000 when the mighty Modifieds take to the track in 30 laps of three-wide, wheel-banging, boiler plate bouncing action.  The 358 Modifieds portion of this show is open to all competitors with heat race qualifying, a consolation and a 30 lap feature.  T

Quaker Steak & Lube has upped the ante with a $50 bonus to sprint car heat race event winners, with the stipulation that they pre-register and $125 to all non-qualified 410 Sprint Cars.

Bonus awards for the 410 Sprint Cars include: $100 Quick Time Bonus and an additional $100 if the track record is broken.  The current track record is held by Jeff Shepard who clocked a time of 11.433 in May of 2008.

For additional information or to pre-enter, please  call  443-513-4456.  Drivers should provide their name, car number, hometown and phone number.

Previous Grandview Speedway PA Speed Week Feature Winners include: Greg Hodnett (2014, 2012, 2003), Tyler Walker (2011, 2010), Chad Kemenah (2009), Fred Rahmer (2008, 2005, 2004, 2002, 1997), Todd Shaffer ( 2007), Billy Pauch (2001), Lance Dewease (1999, 1998)

VONDOHREN SETS NEW ONE LAP TRACK RECORD. . . . . .

“THEY DON’T CALL THIS THE TRAFFIC JAM FOR NOTHING” STATES  RACE WINNER MATT SHEPPARD AFTER DIRTcar VICTORY, DUANE HOWARD TOPS 358 MODIFIED FEATURE TUESDAY NIGHT AT GRANDVIEW

BECHTELSVILLE, PA   . . . . .  Against the odds of Mother Nature, the NAPA Auto Parts Thunder on the Hill Racing Series presented the eighteenth running of the TRAFFIC JAM for Big Block Modifieds under the sanctioning body of DIRTcar.  The NASCAR 358 Modifieds were also on the program that went on even after a few rain showers hovered over the Grandview Speedway.   Matt Sheppard of Waterloo, NY,  enjoyed a big night at Grandview winning the 60 lap  Super DIRTcar Series feature event, earning $6,000 for the win.   Sheppard ran a flawless race, first battling with Billy Dunn, negotiating the lapped traffic then holding off  a side by side challenge for the lead from Billy Decker on lap 58.     Sheppard stated in victory lane,  “They don’t call this the Traffic Jam for nothing”,  commenting that he raced in traffic most of the feature event.  Sheppard  took  the win in the 60 lap feature that had one caution and was completed in just twenty-minutes.    In the 30 lap NASCAR 358 Modified feature, Duane Howard of Oley, PA  was the winner after a hard fought battle with MeMe DeSantis.  Howard earned $3,000 for the win.   Forty nine cars took part in the double header event splitting a total purse of  $42,000.  A strong crowd turned out despite the variable, threatening and unpredictable weather throughout the day that saw two rain showers pass through after the gates were open.

The ALL MODIFIED, ALL NIGHT of racing started off with Craig VonDohren of Oley, PA setting fast time and in the process, he established a new one lap track record of 14.298  earning a one-hundred dollar bonus.   The well prepared racing surface was described by several drivers as being scary fast.

Quaker Steak & Lube offered a $50 bonus to each of the heat race winners.   In the Super DIRTcar Series qualifying events, victories went to Craig VonDohren, Ryan Watt and Ryan Godown.   The NASCAR 358 Modified qualifying events were won by Brett Kressley, MeMe DeSantis and Jared Umbenhauer.

At the start of the 18th Annual Traffic Jam Ryan Watt was the early race leader with challenges from Billy Dunn from the drop of the green flag.  The one and only caution of the feature came on lap two when  Larry Wight lost a wheel going down the backstretch.   Wright was towed to the pits and unable to restart the race.   When green flag racing resumed, Watt retained control of the top spot and opened a slight advantage over runner-up Billy Dunn.    Matt Sheppard was racing in third and well within striking distance of the leaders.

On lap ten, Dunn made a bid for the lead but Watt was able to hold the top spot.   As Dunn and Watt battled for the lead, Sheppard was inching closer to the top two.   Billy Dunn took the lead on lap thirteen  followed by Watt, Sheppard who was now being challenged by Decker  with Stewart Friesen making up the top five.   The action was fast and on lap fourteen, Matt Sheppard motored passed Ryan Watt for second.   One lap later, Billy Decker moved into third and the hunt for Billy Dunn was underway.

The battle for the lead was shaping up on lap sixteen as Sheppard was pressuring Dunn for the lead.   After a few side-by- side laps, Sheppard powered to the lead on lap nineteen.  Decker was on his charge and on lap twenty-two, Sheppard, Dunn and Decker were in a three car race for the lead.  Sheppard prevailed as the race leader as Dunn and Decker continued the chase.

At the halfway sign,  Sheppard was on top as Dunn and Decker raced side-by-side for second followed by Friesen and Watt.

Billy Decker moved into second on lap thirty-three and now had to chase down the race leader.

Lapped cars were now in the picture for race leader Matt Sheppard.  Decker took advantage and began to close in on the leader who had at least a ten car length lead.   Stewart Friesen  moved to third on lap thirty-eight and now he was chasing down the front runners.   Decker moved closer to Sheppard with each lap and with just five laps to go, the crowd was well aware that Decker was within striking distance of the leader.  On lap fifty-seven Decker was on the rear bumper of Sheppard with slower traffic weaving ahead.

Off turn four with just two laps remaining,  Sheppard crossed the line side-by-side.   In turn one, Sheppard drifted high, Decker squared off the corner and took another run at Sheppard using the inside line.  Going into turn three, Sheppard was able to put a lapped car between himself and Decker.   With just one lap remaining Sheppard needed to drive just one perfect lap.   The leader drifted slightly high entering turn three, Decker dove to the bottom lane and with the run off of turn four, Sheppard darted under the checker flag, earning his first career victory in Thunder on the Hill competition at the Grandview Speedway.   Decker, a previous Traffic Jam winner finished a well-deserved second followed by Stewart Friesen, Billy Dunn and Ryan Watt.

The NASCAR 358 Modified feature came onto the track and at the drop of the green flag MeMe DeSantis was the early race leader.   Duane Howard and Jeff Strunk followed DeSantis but were well within striking distance.    On lap seven Howard  nosed ahead of DeSantis  as they crossed the line, then in turns one and two, DeSantis regained the lead.   Howard came back as race leader  as they completed lap eight.   Side-by-side the Howard and DeSantis show continued to play out as Howard finally settled in as race leader on lap ten.   Two laps later, Strunk passed DeSantis for second and now set his sights on race leader Duane Howard.

At the halfway point,  Howard held a comfortable lead over Strunk as DeSantis, Jared Umbenhauer  and Doug Manmiller rounded out the top five.   Also on a charge was Craig VonDohren.

Stealing the show at this point was Doug Manmiller who advanced to fourth on lap twenty-two.  One lap later, Manmiller and DeSanits were door-to-door with Manmiller now racing in third.   Howard maintained his solid lead over Strunk as Manmiller was closing in quickly on Strunk   With just five laps remaining, VonDohren moved into the top five.

With the checker flag waiving, Duane Howard took the win and the $3,000 first place prize over Jeff Strunk,  Doug Manmiller, MeMe DeSantis and Craig VonDohren.

RICK LAUBACH READIES FOR DOUBLE DOWN NIGHT AT GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY TUESDAY, JUNE 16 AS NAPA AUTO PARTS THUNDER ON THE HILL RACING SERIES CONTINUES ON THE HILL

Any car, any track, any rules – that should be the motto of Hellertown, PA’s Rick Laubach heading into Tuesday, June 16 at the Grandview Speedway when NAPA Auto Parts Thunder on the Hill Racing Series presents the 18th Annual Traffic Jam – a Modified double header with the Super DIRTcar Big-Block Series and the NASCAR 358 Modifieds in co-main events.   Gates open at 5 PMwith race time set for 7:30 PM.

Laubach, the 2014 Traffic Jam event winner, has already bested the Super DIRTcar Series regulars -- picking up a victory at the DIRTcar Nationals this past February, has grabbed big-block and small-block wins at his weekly home tracks and dominated mid-week special events.

Piloting the Gary & Lori Hermann-owned No. 7 Big-Block portion and the Gary Spotts-owned No. 91 in the Small-Block portion, the 42-year-old wheelman remains confident and excited for the “All Modifieds – All Night” showcase.

“It’s great to have the Super DIRTcar Series at Grandview, I think running one race for the big-blocks and one race for the small-blocks really puts it in the hands of the driver,” Laubach said.  “You don’t have to fight with rules packages, you know going in that it is going to be a driver’s race.”

Laubach is one of many drivers with their eyes on a single-night $10,000 payday as Pioneer Pole Buildings adds an additional $1,000 to an already hefty $44,000 total purse -- to any driver that can sweep the night’s events winning both the big-block and small-block features.

Other drivers attempting to ‘Double Down’ include: Ryan Watt, Ryan Godown, Craig VonDohren, Jeff Strunk, Danny Johnson, Duane Howard and Meme Desantis.

With this cast of competitors winning two features is no easy task, as drivers like Matt Sheppard, Billy Decker, Stewart Friesen, Tim Fuller, Brett Hearn, Billy Pauch Jr. and Jimmy Horton are hoping to spoil someone’s big money dreams.

The Super DIRTcar Series Big-Block Modifieds will compete in a 60-Lap feature event paying $6,000 to the winner and the NASCAR 358 Modifieds will participate in a 30-Lap feature paying $3,000 to the winner.

Big-Blocks will compete in timed warm-ups to determine heat race starting positions.  Top qualifers from the heat races will draw to determine main event starting positions.  Consolation events will set the remainder of the field.

Small-block drivers will draw for heat race starting positions, with the top qualifiers re-drawing for feature starting positions.  Consolation events will round out the field.

Quaker Steak & Lube has upped the ante with a $50 bonus to heat race event winners, with the stipulation that they pre-register.

There is NO ENTRY FEE but competitors are encouraged to pre-register for the event by calling 443-513-4456 and leaving their name, car number and contact information.

Past Traffic Jam Winners include: Rick Laubach (2014), Duane Howard (2013), Danny Johnson (2012), Jeff Strunk (2011), Craig VonDohren (2010), Tim Fuller (2009, 2005), Brett Hearn (2009, 2007, 2002, 1998), Billy Decker (2008, 2003), Alan Johnson (2006), Tim McCreadie (2004, 2001), Frank Cozze (2000), and Jimmy Horton (1999)
