Leonard, Frye, Svoboda, Wassom, Richards, and Naggatz take top honors on last race of June at Junction Motor Speedway.
6/24/17

Saturday night marked the last weekly racing program for the month of June for the weekend warriors of Junction Motor Speedway, and many drivers were looking to make a statement going into the month of July.
The NeSmith late models, Nebraska mod lites and all four of the speedways IMCA weekly racing divisions were all in action on a gorgeous late June evening in McCool Junction.
The NeSmith late models went caution-free in their 25-lap main event on Saturday, and during the race, four different drivers led laps. Shelton, Nebraska’s Bryce Taylor led the first lap before Delbert Smith made his move for the lead on lap two. The Wichita, Kansas native went on to lead the next eight laps.
With 16 laps remaining, Delbert’s son Dan took over the lead and was out in front for the next eight laps before the lead was exchanged for the final time when Josh Leonard got around Smith coming off turn four with eight laps remaining.
Dan Smith gave a late race charge to Leonard, but the Gibbon, Nebraska driver managed to put two lapped cars between himself and second place.
Leonard took the win while Les Siebert snuck by Dan Smith for second on the final lap. Dan and Delbert Smith finished third and fourth while Chris Buller rounded out the top five.
The IMCA modifieds were back for another 20-lap feature event. Early on, Tom Svoboda was out in front. Svoboda was fending off drivers left, right and center to keep the lead, one of those drivers being Steve Swarthout who spun out on lap two while trying to go for the lead bringing out the first caution flag.
On the restart, Tyler Frye got around Svoboda for the lead and proceeded to run away with the show. The Belleville, Kansas driver was looking to go to victory lane for the second time at the Junction in 2017.
The race went caution-free until three laps were left after Phillip Loseke spun out in turn two. That bunched the field back up, but Frye hit his marks and got a great start. He had enough room between himself and second place Andy Wilkinson to hold on for the win.
Wilkinson took the second spot while Micah Veleba finished in third. Defending track champion Justin Gregg took fourth, and Justin Jurgens rounded out the top five.
A great field of sport mods were on hand for a big 20-lap feature. Justin Svoboda was out in front for the entire race, but he had to earn the win because he had multiple challenges coming from Tyler Mark, Brent Kassik, and his older brother Austin.
Ryan Peltier and Justin Bell were the only spin victims of the night bring out the caution flag with seven laps to go and then with five to go. After the final restart, it was a battle between the Svoboda brothers. Austin and Justin had already put on one of the best races of the year a couple of weeks earlier, and Saturday was the rematch.
When the dust settled, it was little brother Justin getting one over big brother Austin. The brothers Svoboda took first and second while Tyler Mark finished in third. Jarred Hackler worked his way through the field to finish fourth, and Rocky Zimmerman rounded out the top five.
Like the sport mods, Saturday had a good field of hobby stocks on hand. The 14-lap feature began with Tyler Barribo showing the way. The Grand Island, Nebraska driver led the majority of the race, but with four laps to go, Luke Wassom and Zach Olmstead tried to make their moves around Barribo for the lead. Some contact was made, and Barribo went around between turns one and two bringing out the caution.
That handed the lead over to Wassom with Olmstead running second. With just two laps to go, Olmstead decided to make his move for the lead. Olmstead slid up the track giving Wassom a tap. Wassom hung on to the lead while Olmstead fell back six positions.
Wassom picked up the win adding to his point lead Kyle Hein took second. Allen Myers recorded his career-best finish at Junction Motor Speedway coming home in third. Brandon Wergin and Chad Heeter rounded out the top five.
The sport compacts were back on hand for a ten-lap feature. The race was dominated current IMCA sport compact national points leader Dillon Richards. The Beatrice, Nebraska driver held off multiple challenges from Travis Thelander and John Martinez to get the win. It was Richards’ second night on his new car, and he now has two wins with the car.
Thelander came home in second with Martinez taking third followed by Alyssa Naber and Casey Bagwell to round out the top five.
The Nebraska Mod Lites were back at their home track after a couple of trips to Off-Road Speedway in Norfolk, Nebraska and the Stuart Raceway in Stuart. Rich Enevoldsen led the first three laps of the ten-lap feature before point leader Scott Naggatz took command.
Brandon Piersol and Tyler Svoboda brought out the first caution with six laps to go when they both spun out in turn two. The final caution of the race came out two laps later for another Piersol spin, this time in turn four.
Scott Naggatz was able to hold off a charge by Enevoldsen late in the distance to get the win and remain undefeated at Junction Motor Speedway. Enevoldsen took the second place finish while Doug and Taylor Pollack finished third and fourth. Troy Reeves rounded out the top five.
