Chevys Invade The Coast

By Mark Humphrey

Queenscliff, Vic/Aus. 27th October 2014. Hundreds of Chevrolet vehicles converged on the west coast of Victoria to take part in the 38th National Chevrolet Festival which included a cruise along the famous Great Ocean Road, a night cruise on Geelong’s Corio Bay and a show n shine at the picturesque Queenscliff foreshore.Muscle car. This 55 Chev was the standout for modified muscle

Chevrolet owners from all parts of Australia made the trek into Geelong on Friday to take part in the 4 day National event. Normally run in New South Wales or Queensland, the national executive decided to hold the 38th running in Victoria and handed over the event organisation to the Victorian chapter.Classic Corvette in mint condition

Local Chevrolet enthusiast and member of the Victorian Chevrolet Car Club Eric Norton had the enviable task of putting together the 4 day program which showcased some of the regions spectacular settings. I caught up with Eric at the Queenscliff Show n Shine to get a run down on the weekend’s activities and started by asking Eric how this all come about “Well normally the NSW executive run the event which for the last 8 years has been in NSW but this year they asked if Victoria could take over the reins. As a member of the Chevrolet Car Club of Victoria I didn’t mind putting together a program that showcased some of the regions attractions which included the Great Ocean Road and the historic town of Queenscliff” he said.  Norton added “some of these people have driven their cars into Geelong from as far away as Queensland so it was important to give these people a weekend that they will long remember”.One of the best wagons you will see was on show at Queenscliff

Friday kicked off the festival with the mandatory registration and show bag handout. Saturday was billed as a marquee day with members congregating in Torquay around midday to take the spectacular coastal drive along the Great Ocean Road to Lorne. A couple of stops on the way including the hotrod lounge at Aireys Inlet which was a hit with members. Eric had organised a boat cruise on Corio Bay Saturday night taking in the lights of downtown Geelong whilst enjoying beverages from the regions local wine growers. Sunday was also another marquee day with the Show n Shine on the foreshore at Queenscliff. Known throughout the state as a spectacular back drop for car events the Queenscliff foreshore provided the perfect location for the 200 or so Chevy enthusiasts who proudly displayed their machines. With a huge number of spectators coming and going throughout the day the Show n Shine was definitely a feature of the weekend with the local children's charity "Cottage By The Sea" benefiting from the days proceeds. Off to The Wool Exchange Hotel for presentations on Sunday evening with a farewell BBQ lunch on Monday rounding out a well organised and patronised 38th National Chevrolet Festival.Another of the signature models on display was this mint Camaro

Looking around at the car owners proudly displaying their Chevrolets you get the feeling that these Chevy owners will take away memories of the 38th National Chevrolet Festival that will last a life time. For the final word on the event I asked Eric to reflect on the weekend that was the National Festival “It’s been a lot of organising and hard work by everyone involved but when you look at the response today from the car owners and spectators you just know it’s been worthwhile. I’ve tried to get as much Geelong culture into the event as I could and judging on the feedback I think our visitors have warmed to the region” he said. The 55-57 models were popular on the weekend.

Chevrolet owners will pull out of the bay side region today and cruise back to their home town destinations knowing they help celebrate one of the most successful and picturesque National Chevrolet Festivals in recent memory.Another of the 55 range.
