Tempat Boyum Ini | #TheSearch by Rip Curl

====================================================================

World #1, Matt Wilkinson and World #3, Gabriel Medina along with Indonesian god, Garut Widiarta dusted off the spirit of #TheSearch and boarded a boat with no plan beyond getting tubed, laying some rail, playing some pong, and unwinding at night with a few beers and plenty of laughs in the 12th episode of #TheSearch - Tempat Boyum Ini.

With the World Surf League title race heating up, Wilkinson and Medina disappeared from the media spotlight in between J-Bay and Teahupoo to charge one of the worlds best lefts! The waves pumped and the boys let their surfing do the talking in some postcard sets in the tropical paradise. Widiarta was quick to point out that you don't have to be a world title contender to get some extended barrel time as well.

MICK FANNING CLAIMS VICTORY

JEFFREYS BAY, South Africa (Saturday, July 16, 2016) - Three-time WSL Champion Mick Fanning (AUS) has won the J'Bay Open, stop No. 6 on the 2016 Samsung Galaxy World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT), defeating John John Florence (HAW) in an exciting Final in three-to-four foot (1 metre) surf at Jeffreys Bay.

The incredible victory comes a year after a dramatic incident during the 2015 J-Bay Open Final where Fanning was attacked on live television by what is believed to be a Great White Shark.

“It’s definitely a very different feeling this win,” said Fanning. “There was a real emotional build up coming back here this year. That Semifinal with Julian was really special and it was wonderful to have a heat with him again. Definitely some emotions went into it paddling out and it was just really special having a surf with him out there and both of us come in safe. I’m stoked that I got to come back and right the wrongs that happened last year. I’ve done that now so I can move on.”

The win today is Fanning’s 22nd Championship Tour victory and his fourth at the J-Bay Open, which sees him equal Slater’s record of four event wins at Jeffreys Bay. Fanning defeated Filipe Toledo (BRA) and Julian Wilson (AUS) en route to the Final today.

Fanning, who is taking a personal year in 2016 and only surfing in select events this season, leaps up from 16th to 5th place on the WSL Jeep Leaderboard.

“It’s awesome to be in 5th place but I don’t really care about results this year,” said Fanning. “I just want to thank everyone who has supported me over the past year, I’ve had so much support, and I’m looking forward to celebrating. For me this year feels a lot lighter not going for a world title so I’m really enjoying my surfing and having a lot of fun. I’ll be surfing at Trestles and I think that might be my last event of the year. World titles aren’t the biggest thing for me at the moment - I’m all about enjoying my surfing.”

Today’s runner-up finish for Florence sees him move up to second place on the Jeep Leaderboard for the first time in his career and close the gap on ratings leader Matt Wilkinson (AUS) heading into the next event on the CT, the Billabong Pro Tahiti.

Fanning got things started in the Final with a solid 7.17 but Florence answered with a technical aerial maneuver followed by two aggressive turns and was rewarded with an 8.50 and the lead. The Australian went on to find the wave of the Final and unleash his trademark turns on the walls of Jeffreys Bay to secure a near-perfect 9.93 and an impressive advantage. Florence fought back with an air reverse with eight minutes remaining to post a back-up score but it wasn’t enough to take first place. The final exchange saw Fanning race down the line while Florence delivered two full-rail carves and another air reverse. Florence earned an 8.63 but the score fell short and Fanning took the win with a 17.70 heat total.

The next stop on the 2016 Samsung Galaxy WSL Championship Tour will be the Vans US Open of Surfing, which will see the world’s best female surfers resume this season’s title race from July 25 - 31.

Bethany Hamilton; The World's Most Amazing Surfer?

Bethany Hamilton eliminates world number one Tyler Wright and defeats 6 times World Champion Stephanie Gilmore, Hamilton is into the Quarterfinals at the Fiji Pro.

TAVARUA, Fiji (Monday, May 30, 2016) - Bethany Hamilton (HAW), global sporting icon and shark attack survivor, delivered a ground-breaking performance today at the Fiji Women's Pro to take down World No. 1 Tyler Wright (AUS) and 6-time World Champion Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) in excellent conditions at Cloudbreak.

Hamilton, who lost an arm following a shark attack when she was a teenager, is one of the world's most powerful and inspiring surfers and was awarded the wildcard into the Fiji Women's Pro, Stop No. 5 of 10 on the Samsung Galaxy World Surf League Championship Tour.

She caused a huge upset today by defeating current No. 1 on the Jeep Leaderboard, Wright, in Round 2 with a near-perfect 9 point ride and eliminating her from the competition. Hamilton continued her exceptional run of form and went on to defeat 6-time WSL Champion Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) in Round 3. This incredible sporting feat will secure a place in the Quarterfinals for Hamilton and the Fiji Women's Pro is regarded as one of the world's most prestigious surfing events.

Gilmore now moves into Round 4 where she has a second chance at securing a Quarterfinal berth.
“I have so much respect for Tyler,” Hamilton said. “I love her surfing and love her as a human, and I am rooting for her this year. I think she should win a World Title, so I have mixed feelings right now. I am so happy because I have not had a good heat in a while, so this win feels good. The goal was to get one more good wave after my 9.00 becuase I knew that Tyler could easily get a good score. I got that good wave after hers and it sealed the deal.”

After winning three of the first four events (Gold Coast, Margaret River and Rio de Janeiro) and finishing 5th at Bells Beach this year, Wright has established herself as a World Title contender in 2016. Wright's finish at Fiji will be her worst result this season and her second ever 13th place finish.

“Heats like that are enjoyable because they are so close, and it was a great battle with Bethany,” said Wright. “I am stoked because she is the greatest human. I am stoked with the way I surfed and the way I ran my heat. I actually would not change anything about my performance. Over the last few years out here I have made reckless mistakes and I had no intent this year to do that. I was all about turns and doing what needs to be done to get through the heat, and I did that. If the heat went my way, I would be just as happy as I am now.”

Tyler Wright Claims Victory At Oi Rio Pro

BARRA DA TIJUCA, Rio de Janeiro/Brazil (Tuesday, May 17, 2016) – A heated final day at the Oi Rio Women’s Pro, the fourth stop on the Samsung Galaxy WSL Championship Tour, saw Tyler Wright (AUS) claim victory at Barra da Tijuca defeating Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS) in a hard-fought Final.

The win today in Rio is Wright’s third of the season, following previous triumphs on the Gold Coast and at Margaret River. Back-to-back event wins see her take first place on the Jeep Leaderboard and Wright will wear the leader jersey at the upcoming Fiji Women’s Pro. Wright previously dispatched Carissa Moore (HAW) and Johanne Defay (FRA) en route to the Final today.

“This is the best I’ve ever felt,” Wright said. “Over the last six months so many things have happened and it has given me a lot of perspective on the way I want to run my career and surf my heats. I want to say a massive thanks to my family. They make it all worthwhile.”

“I am so excited to win here in Brazil,” continued Wright. “It is fun and there are so many things you need to take into account, and you have to just flow with it. I think this was the most challenging of any event and any final. It was hard work and I am stoked.”

The all-Australian Final match-up saw a close battle between Wright and Fitzgibbons. Showcasing her power surfing and control, Wright set the bar early on by dropping an excellent 8.67. Wright continued to back up her opening ride, putting pressure on Fitzgibbons to land a solid score. With ten minutes left on the clock, Fitzgibbons hammered a critical section to earn 7.17 and begin to close the gap on Wright. In the closing minutes Fitzgibbons was left searching for 5.94 while massive sets out the back pushed the athletes further from the take-off. Fitzgibbons was out of position to attempt a final attack and Wright, with a 13.10 two-wave score, defeated Fitzgibbons by 2.76 points to take the win.

Today is the second Final berth for Fitzgibbons this season, who also finished runner-up at Bells Beach. The result will see the two-time Rio event winner move up one place on the Jeep Leaderboard from 6th to 5th. To reach the Final Fitzgibbons took down Courtney Conlogue (USA) and Malia Manuel (HAW).

“It was a great effort by Tyler and huge congratulations to her,” said Fitzgibbons. “In the Final, I was just hoping for one more wave at the end. I could feel that win. I had put myself back into contention, and I loved the challenge today. I really feed off the energy of the crowd. The fans here are so passionate about surfing, so it is a pleasure to come here and perform.”

2015 event winner Courtney Conlogue (USA) will relinquish the Jeep Leader Jersey after being defeated by Fitzgibbons in Semifinal 1. With an event win at Bells Beach and runner-up finishes on the Gold Coast and at Margaret River, today’s result marks Conlogue’s first absence from the Finals this season and sees her move to 2nd place on the Jeep Leaderboard.

The bout between Conlogue and Fitzgibbons saw multiple lead changes, as both surfers put everything on the line to advance to the Finals. Fitzgibbons held onto a 14.10 heat score, leaving Conlogue to chase a 6.61. In the dying seconds of the heat, Conlogue had one last opportunity to post the required score, but could not stick the landing.

“This finish is a positive, as third is a keeper result at the end of the season,” Conlogue said. “But I was definitely hoping to get the win and it was a bit frustrating to not catch those skis. I just have to learn from what went on in that heat, so I can draw off of that knowledge for Fiji. Things were zig-zagging all the way through the final minutes. I have to brush my knees off and get ready for the next one.”

Wright took down Carissa Moore (HAW), reigning three-time WSL Champion, in Semifinal 2. Moore has yet to secure a spot in the Finals this season, with a Semifinal finish at each event of the season so far. The World Champion will head into Fiji in third place on the Jeep Leaderboard.

Wright opened up Semifinal 2 against Moore with a huge frontside hook to earn an 8.77, the highest score of the heat and the Semifinal match-ups. Wright controlled the Semifinal with a 13.60 two-wave score, forcing Moore to chase a 7.68. Moore was not able to find the waves to combat Wright.

Event organizers will reconvene tomorrow at 6:30am local time for a possible 7am start.
