Jodie Robinson set to focus racing efforts in Northern California for 2018

Foresthill, CA – January 23, 2018…Foresthill, California youngster Jodie Robinson is gearing up for the 2018 racing season and will be shifting her focus to competing regularly aboard a Winged Sprint Car in her home state of California.

This past season saw the fourteen-year-old Robinson bounce back and forth between dirt tracks in Northern California and piloting a midget with Keith Kunz Motorsports in the Midwest, while also spending time in a pavement late model and an Outlaw Kart.

For the upcoming year she is scheduled to center her efforts on competing full-time in a Winged 360 Sprint Car at the Placerville Speedway, a venue where her father David is a former three-time track champion.

“I definitely look forward to running the Winged 360 full-time in California this year,” Robinson commented. “Competing at Placerville Speedway on a weekly basis will be a lot of fun and a great experience to get under my belt. Placerville is a technical track and there’s always a lot of great competition each week. It’s one of my favorite tracks because of the atmosphere and I always love to see so many young fans in the pit area after the races. My dad had a lot of success there as well, so it’s really cool that I’ll have the chance to run there.”

Last year Robinson had a total of 12 starts in a Winged 360 Sprint Car out west. Her highlight during those outings came when she held off decorated champions Kyle Hirst, Andy Forsberg and Sean Becker to win a heat race at the Nor-Cal Posse Shootout in Placerville during the month of September.

“I really want to thank Brown Eagle Racing for the opportunity to drive for them once again,” she said. “Every time I hit the track I use it as a learning experience and I feel that focusing solely on the Winged Sprint Car will be a benefit this season. I felt like we had some bright moments in limited starts last year, so I can’t wait to get it all underway in March. I had a blast running around the country last year in different cars, but believe that running in a consistent environment will help me develop as a driver even more.”

Robinson, who turns fifteen on February 5, is one of the many graduates from the Outlaw Kart ranks in Northern California. She started racing karts at the age of seven and has captured 85 wins in her career, along with the 2016 Cycleland Speedway 500cc Open Intermediate championship.

This past season she also had the opportunity to take part in Toyota Media Day and go through various seminars with the company. “Being able to travel around and do interviews for FS1 with guys like Kyle Busch and Eric Jones was pretty special. Being a part of Toyota Motorsports Day and signing autographs alongside some of the Toyota legends in Texas was something I’ll never forget either. All of that was truly a great experience and one that I’m thankful for.”

In addition to competing at the Placerville Speedway on a regular basis Robinson also hopes to run with the Elk Grove Ford Sprint Car Challenge Tour presented by Abreu Vineyards as much as possible in 2018. She is scheduled to open the season at the annual Silver Cup in Chico on March 2 and 3.

Jodie Robinson would like to thank Brown Eagle Racing, Roseville Precision, Rod Tiner Racing, Steve and Sharon Katonis, Janet and Mike Larson of MAJIK Motorsports, John Boy, Bullard Construction, Toyota Racing Development, M&L Plumbing, Morrison Concrete, Pacific Adhesive and Gary Morgan Graphics for their support this season.

Placerville Speedway set to open the Red Hawk Casino championship season this Saturday

By Gary Thomas

Placerville, CA – April 18, 2017…On the heels of two successful events to help launch the 2017 campaign Placerville Speedway now readies to kick-off the Red Hawk Casino championship season this Saturday April 22, with picture perfect weather on tap.

The previous attempt to open the weekly racing season on April 8 fell victim to rain, but early weather reports show 80 degree temps forecasted for Saturday. Headlining the night of racing will be the Thompson’s Auto Group Winged 360 Sprint Cars, along with the Ltd. Late Models, Pure Stocks, BCRA Midget Lites and Vintage Hard Tops. This Saturday marks the first of what will now be 15 Red Hawk Casino Championship events at the quarter-mile clay oval in 2017.

“After the rain out on April 8 I know that we are definitely eager to get the Red Hawk Casino championship season underway this Saturday,” commented second-year promoter Scott Russell of Russell Motorsports Inc. “All the local teams are chomping at the bit to open the point season and we look forward to doing so this weekend. It’s going to be a great year at Placerville Speedway and we’re excited to see all the racers and fans on Saturday.”

Princeton’s Mason Moore captured a trio of wins en route to his first career title with the Thompson’s Auto Group Winged 360 Sprint Cars last season. Four-time track champion Greg Decaires ran second in the championship chase last year and looks to get back atop the hill in 2017. The Elk Grove veteran is always one of the drivers to beat at the helm of the Dale Miller Plumbing No. 4sa mount.

Additional drivers looking to start off the season in victory lane will include Placerville’s Andy Gregg, Jimmy Trulli and CJ Humphreys, Shingle Springs’ Justin Johnson, Calistoga’s Mike Benson, Fair Oaks’ Jake Morgan, Sacramento’s DJ Freitas, Sutter’s Tyler Seavey and more.

Last year’s Ltd. Late Model title was brought home by Eddie Gardner over Mike and Tyler Lightfoot, Ryan Peter and Ray Trimble. The Pure Stock championship went to Nick Baldwin by a narrow margin over Dan Jinkerson. At season’s end Baldwin earned the gold by just four-points. Scott Grunert, Travis Emery and Orville Owens rounded out the top-five in the standings. The Ltd. Late Models and Pure Stocks are a great compliment to the Winged Sprints during the Red Hawk Casino championship season.

The BCRA Midget Lites will be a common site at the Placerville Speedway and always provide exciting competition. The midget lites are scheduled to be on hand seven times this season. The Vintage Hard Tops round out the card for opening night on Saturday.

Special events that dot the schedule this year include Big Trophy Night on May 20, Thompson’s Auto Group Fan Appreciation Day on June 10, the annual 4th of July Freedom Fireworks spectacular on Tuesday July 4, Mountain Democrat Kids Bike Night on July 8, the 14th annual Tribute to Al Hinds on August 5, the 12th annual $5,000-to-win Mark Forni Classic on August 19 and the season-ending Tilford Tribute on September 30.

After being plagued by Mother Nature this past season the Nor-Cal Posse Shootout returns with an added twist, as it morphs into a three-night show. The much anticipated weekend begins on Thursday September 21 with injected Wingless 360 Sprint Cars and the C&H Veteran Ent. presents Hunt Magnetos Wingless Tour taking to the track. Following that the Winged 360 Sprint Cars will take center stage alongside the BCRA Midget Lites on Friday & Saturday September 22 & 23.

The King of the West- NARC Fujitsu 410 Sprint Car Series will also be on hand for one night of high-speed action during a special Mother’s Day weekend event on Saturday May 13. The Elk Grove Ford Sprint Car Challenge Tour presented by Abreu Vineyards featured a very successful event last week and will return to Placerville for a special Friday show on August 25.

Adult tickets this Saturday for the Red Hawk Casino championship opener will cost $15, while seniors 62 plus and juniors 12-15 will be $13, children 6-11 are $6 and those under 6 will be free. The pit gate will open at 2pm, with the front grandstand gate opening at 3pm.

A happy hour will be offered from 4pm-6pm in the grandstands featuring discounted Coors Light and Coors Original at the beer stand. Drivers meeting will be held at 4:30pm, with cars on track for wheel packing at 5pm, qualifying scheduled to begin around 5:30pm and heat races expected to fire-off at 6pm.

Bud Kaeding inherits lead late in the race and drives off to score first career Placerville Speedway King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series win

By Gary Thomas

Placerville, CA – April 23, 2016…Willie Croft’s late-race misfortune was certainly Bud Kaeding’s gain on Saturday night, when the King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series officially kicked-off the 2016 season at the El Dorado County Fairgrounds based Placerville Speedway.

After winning the six-lap Dash to earn the pole in the feature Croft was able to hold command out front, all the while racing through heavy lapped traffic on the tight quarter-mile. Kaeding would keep him honest in traffic however, stalking the rear bumper of the familiar Holy Smokes BBQ No. 29 mount.

The pair raced closely together for a majority of the race, weaving in & out of the slower traffic, until the complexion of the main event changed on lap 25. As the leaders charged into turn one lapped cars ahead of them came together, leaving Croft nowhere to go, resulting in him making contact with the cars and coming to a stop.

It was a tough break for Croft, who had shown speed all night long. During the melee it looked as if multiple front runners would get caught up, but Croft was the lone victim in it. After inheriting the lead it was then clear sailing out front for Kaeding in the Williams Motorsports 0, who took the Ed Entz checkered flag by 1.135 seconds over Elk Grove’s Bobby McMahan.

For Kaeding it marked his first ever series win at the track and the 13th overall of his KWS career, which gives him sole possession of ninth all-time. He now sits just one victory away from tying former World of Outlaws champion Jason Meyers on the all-time series list. It was a solid way for the Campbell, CA driver to start out the season after missing out on the title by just 12-markers last year.

“It feels great to start out the season in victory lane and for it to be in Placerville is pretty cool,” Kaeding commented. “You can probably say that this hasn’t always been my favorite track, but to win championships you have to be good everywhere, so to win this race is huge for us. That was a tough break for Willie Croft to get caught up in traffic, because he was good all night. I can’t thank Morrie & Katie Williams enough for the opportunity to drive this car. We’ll now go on and try to win the Bradway again next week in Chico.”

The runner up effort for McMahan was his best King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series finish since the 2014 season. The veteran began his Sprint Car career at the Placerville Speedway bullring way back in 1982, so it’s always a bit of a home-coming for the likable driver. McMahan is fresh off a year where he finished third in the KWS standings aboard the American Tool & MFG No. 25 Sprinter.

Chico’s Jonathan Allard charged from 14th to third in the feature at the helm of his Tri-C Manufacturing No. 3c machine. The three-time King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series champion looked strong in the 30-lapper and got faster as the race went on. Allard now moves on to next week’s Dave Bradway Jr. Memorial, an event he’s won five times before.

Penngrove’s Chase Johnson earned his career best KWS finish by running fourth. It was an impressive effort put together by the 20-year-old second-year series competitor and his Thomas Family Racing team. The top-five was rounded out by 16th starter Dominic Scelzi of Fresno. The 18-year-old made a nice rebound in the feature to earn a solid finish aboard the Scelzi Enterprises No. 41 Sprinter.

The remainder of the top-10 was filled out by 20th starter & Hard Charger in the feature Shane Golobic of Fremont, Grass Valley’s Jason Statler, Roseville’s Colby Copeland, Fresno’s Cory Eliason and Hanford’s DJ Netto. It was also a nice recovery by Netto, who had gotten into a spin following a chain reaction in front of him while running third on lap 16. Up to that point Netto had looked to be challenger for the leaders.

Hanford’s Mitchell Faccinto captured the LCQ, with Croft claiming the Dash as noted. The three 10-lap heats were picked off by DJ Netto, Bobby McMahan and Willie Croft. Cory Eliason opened the night by setting fast time with a lap of 10.726 around the quarter-mile. Full results will be available at www.racepmg.com

A-main finish: 1. 0 Bud Kaeding, 2. 25 Bobby McMahan, 3. 3c Jonathan Allard, 4. 68 Chase Johnson, 5. 41 Dominic Scelzi, 6. 22 Shane Golobic, 7. 00 Jason Statler, 8. 19 Colby Copeland, 9. 00jr Cory Eliason, 10. 88n DJ Netto, 11. 21x Kyle Hirst, 12. 69 Brent Kaeding, 13. 37 Mitchell Faccinto, 14. 21p Robbie Price, 15. 98 Sean Watts, 16. M21 Kalib Henry, 17. 22m Mason Moore, 18. 29 Willie Croft, 19. 31c Justyn Cox, 20. 12 Jarrett Soares, 21. 17 Justin Sanders, 22. 7c Andy Forsberg

The King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series will now head for the 26th annual Dave Bradway Jr. Memorial next Saturday night at Chico’s Silver Dollar Speedway. The event is always one of the biggest in Northern California and features extra money & awards on the line all night long.

The front gate will open at 5pm next Saturday April 30, with adult tickets $20, juniors 12-15 will be $15 and kids 6-11 are $6. All seating is general admission during the night. The Silver Dollar Speedway is located on the Silver Dollar Fairgrounds, a half-mile west of SR 99 on Park Ave in Chico, California. Camping is available for the weekend on the fairgrounds. King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series geared up to begin the regular season at Placerville Speedway this Saturday April 23

By Gary Thomas

Placerville, CA – April 19, 2016…Well known for its steep banks, distinctive red clay, loyal fan base and extremely close action, the El Dorado County Fairgrounds based Placerville Speedway is set to play host to the King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series season-opener this Saturday night April 23.

The Placerville Speedway is located just 40 minutes from the capital city of Sacramento and marks the first full point race for KWS after opening the season with a co-sanctioned event in Tulare with the World of Outlaws on March 12.

Including this Saturday the King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series regular season starts off with five consecutive weeks of racing, prior to a break during Memorial Day weekend. In addition to Saturday’s opener the King of the West Series will also return to the Placerville Speedway for events on Saturday July 30 & Saturday September 24.

With last year’s King of the West champion Carson Macedo competing for Keith Kunz Motorsports in the Midwest it opens the door for a different titlist in 2016. Last season the 19-year-old joined the illustrious list of past champions that includes Kyle Hirst, Jonathan Allard, Brent Kaeding, Tim Kaeding, Kyle Larson, Tyler Walker, Sean Becker, Jason Statler, Ronnie Day, Randy Hannagan, Tim Green and the “Original King” Steve Kent.

Last year two-time KWS champion Kyle Hirst led the way with five wins on the season and looks to be a favorite for the title in 2016. The 28-year-old Paradise resident is set to drive for Tarlton Racing with support from Roth Motorsports and will be gunning to duplicate his championship performances from 2013 & ’14. Hirst also swept both King of the West events in Placerville last season and has started off this year in solid fashion, including a podium finish with the World of Outlaws in Stockton.

After missing out on his first KWS title by just 12-points it could be the year for Campbell’s Bud Kaeding, who captured the prestigious Trophy Cup last October at Thunderbowl Raceway. The driver of the Williams Motorsports ZERO also claimed his first career Dave Bradway Jr. Memorial last season with KWS. Elk Grove veteran Bobby McMahan finished third in the points last year, ending the campaign with no dnf’s. McMahan returns to the track this Saturday where he began his Sprint Car career in 1982.

Hanford’s DJ Netto claimed two KWS wins last season and will be looking for more in 2016. The Central Valley youngster ended the season fourth in points and will be a threat to move up the ladder in 2016. A few weeks back Netto impressed everyone with the World of Outlaws in Chico, until fuel issues ended his bid at victory. Three-time King of the West titlist Jonathan Allard of Chico will also be searching to add a fourth crown to his resume this year. The veteran drove to victory at the season-ending Tribute to Gary Patterson last November.

A couple new faces joining the King of the West trail this year and looking to make their mark are Watsonville’s Justin Sanders & Clarksburg’s Justyn Cox. Sander’s is coming off a fantastic season that saw him claim 20 main event victories and earn track titles at Ocean Speedway & Marysville Raceway. Cox last November brought home a runner up at the Tribute to Gary Patterson in Stockton with the Civil War Series and places his 2016 focus on chasing points with the King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series.

More drivers expected for this Saturday’s opener will include Fresno’s Dominic Scelzi & Cory Eliason, Auburn’s Andy Forsberg, Roseville’s Willie Croft & Colby Copeland, Los Angeles, CA’s Tyler Walker, Fremont’s Shane Golobic, Grass Valley’s Jason Statler, Hanford’s Mitchell Faccinto, Penngrove’s Chase Johnson, Campbell’s Brent Kaeding, Princeton’s Mason Moore, Gilroy’s Jarrett Soares, Auburn’s Richard Brace Jr., Coarsegold’s Scott Parker, Atwater’s Sean Watts, Murrieta’s Cori Andrews and others.

Adult tickets this Saturday cost $22, seniors 62 & over and juniors 12-15 will be $15 with kids 6-11 being $6. Children under 6 are free. The pit gate at Placerville Speedway on Saturday opens at 2pm, with the front gate opening at 3pm and racing anticipated to begin around 7pm.

The Placerville Speedway is located on the beautiful El Dorado County Fairgrounds in Placerville, California. Take Hwy US-50 to Forni Road/Placerville Drive exit. Then go north on Placerville Drive to the Fairgrounds. The physical address is 100 Placerville Dr., Placerville, CA 95667. For more on Placerville Speedway log onto
