BELLAMBI BEACH, WOLLONGONG (Tuesday, 16 January 2018): The Rip Curl GromSearch presented by Flight Centre National Final saw a drastic increase in swell today as competition was forced to move to the protected corner of Bellambi for day two of the event.

Kai Tandler (Coolangatta, Qld) and Xavier Huxtable (Jan Juc, Vic) flew the flag for the interstate surfing contingent in the second round of the 16-and-Under Boys with both surfers excelling in the solid conditions. Both surfers performed an array of impressive backside maneuvers to post two-wave heat totals in excess of 16.00 and as a result cemented their position into the quarterfinals. Joining them, with heat wins were Ben Gradisen (Gracetown, WA) and Finn Hill (Avoca, NSW) who also claimed their respective heats and earned their position in the quarterfinals.

Jai Glinderman (Lennox Head, NSW) managed to make up for yesterday's round one loss, taking a win in the second round and the quarterfinals of the 14-and-Under Boys. Glinderman capitalised on the solid waves he found, posting a handful of excellent scores, most notably in his quarterfinal when he notched up a near-perfect 9.00 wave score. Glinderman will make his next appearance in the semi-finals.

Nate Hopkins (Noraville, NSW) synced his powerful forehand repertoire to the chunky lefthanders, posting a pair of 7.83 scoring waves in the second round of the 12 Boys. As a result, Hopkins was able to take a convincing win in his second round and claim a spot in the upcoming quarterfinal.

Kirra-Belle Olsson (Avoca, NSW), Sasha Baker (Mudjimba, Qld), Bodhi Leigh Jones (Whale Beach, NSW) and Piper Harrison (Coolangatta, Qld) all claimed wins in their respective 16-and-Under quarterfinals to seal a position in the semi-finals, which will be contested tomorrow.

Currumbin Alley, Gold Coast, Australia (Friday, September 1, 2017)

This Thursday was the official opening for the sixth consecutive season of Surfing Australia’s marquee junior surfing program, the Weet-Bix SurfGroms, and Rip Curl is pleased to announce that we have signed on as a major sponsor for the next three years.

“At Rip Curl, we understand that surfing is the most fun a kid can have,” said Neil Ridgway, Rip Curl’s Group Advertising and Marketing Chairman. “Bringing that to the next generation of surfers through the SurfGroms program is something we’re stoked to be involved with. With that in mind, grommets are probably the most important surfers in the world and catching a wave is a great way to start the journey.”

Since Weet-Bix SurfGroms first launched in October 2011, more than 60,000 Australian children have experienced the thrill of surfing for the first time, and registrations for the latest programs are now open – just in time for summer.

Surfing Australia CEO Andrew Stark couldn’t be more excited. “We are so stoked to be launching the sixth season of Weet-Bix SurfGroms, with the aim of starting another 10,000 groms on their lifelong surfing journey,” he said. “Surfing Australia is also hugely excited to welcome Rip Curl on board as the Weet-Bix SurfGroms major support partner for the next three seasons. Their support will be crucial in the programs continued success and we thank them for that.”

At the launch of the program, Mick Fanning came down to Currumbin Alley to show his support for Rip Curl’s new partnership, and get groms excited about the summer of surf to come.

NORTH NARRABEEN, SYDNEY (Wednesday, 18 January 2017): The Rip Curl GromSearch presented by Flight Centre National Final saw all champions crowned today in stiflingly hot weather at North Narrabeen Beach.

Jay Brown (Cronulla, NSW) put on a highlight reel worthy performance in the 16-and-Under Boys, posting a near perfect 9.33 scoring wave (out of a possible ten points) to gain the upper hand against fellow event standout Noah Stocca (Peregian Beach, Qld) who put up a valiant fight, posting a 12.67 heat total (out of a possible 20 points), but was unable to notch up the 8.84 wave required to take the top spot. As a result, Brown has earned a spot in the International Final, which will take place later in the year.

Joining Brown at the upcoming Rip Curl GromSearch International Final will be Sunshine Coast surfer Sasha Baker (Mudjimba, Qld) who took out an in-form Piper Harrison (Coolangatta, Qld) in the 16-and-Under Girls final. Baker used her deadly frontside snaps to muster up a 13.40 heat total and take the final ahead of the fellow Queenslander.

George Pittar (Manly, NSW) bagged a title for the Northern Beaches, taking out the 14-and-Under Boys ahead of local surfer Jamie Thomson (Narrabeen, NSW) who was the standout surfer all event. Pittar put on a healthy display of stylish turns to get the edge over Thomson who got within a point of taking the title.

Lennox Head duo Nyxie Ryan (Lennox Head, NSW) and Jai Glinderman (Lennox Head, NSW) both bagged titles for the north coast taking out the 14-and-Under Girls and 12-and-Under Boys respectively. Ryan posted a 15.50 heat total to claim the win ahead of Carly Shanahan (Wooli, NSW), while Glinderman got the nod over fellow Lennox Head standout Jack O’Brien (Lennox Head, NSW). As a former Narrabeen resident, Glinderman had the local crowd on their feet when he claimed the top spot on the dais.

Cedar Leigh-Jones (Whale Beach, NSW) ensured another title remained another trophy stayed on the Northern Beaches, taking out the 12-and-Under Girls. Surfers receive points for their results in each event, which then count towards a National GromSearch ratings system, allowing surfers from around Australia to compare their results with contemporaries. Leaders on the National Ratings will then qualify for the last event of the series, the Rip Curl GromSearch National Final, to be held at North Narrabeen, NSW on January 16-18, 2017.

NORTH NARRABEEN, SYDNEY (Tuesday, 17 January 2017): The Rip Curl GromSearch presented by Flight Centre National Final saw a day of tricky conditions and massive upsets as competitors fought to cement a position into tomorrow’s final rounds.

Local event wildcard Sophia Chapman (Narrabeen, NSW) caused one of the biggest upsets of the event, eliminating top seed Kirra-Belle Olsson (Avoca, NSW) in the 16-and-Under quarterfinals. Chapman used her local knowledge to muster up a respectable 13.33 heat total (out of a possible 20 points) and eliminate the former event runner-up from the competition. Chapman will face Sasha Baker (Mudjimba, Qld) in tomorrow’s semi-final after Baker eliminated local ripper Tru Starling (Narrabeen, NSW) in the second quarterfinal.

Fellow Northern Beaches local Bodhi Leigh-Jones (Whale Beach, NSW) was also eliminated in the quarterfinals by Piper Harrison (Coolangatta, Qld) after Leigh-Jones was unable to find a near-perfect 9.44 scoring wave to better Harrison’s impressive 13.93 heat total.

Hot off a recent victory in the 2016 Surf, Dive ‘N’ Ski Australian Junior Titles at Phillip Island, Xavier Huxtable (Jan Juc, Vic) was unable to find the same form and fell victim to the deadly forehand attack of Noah Stocca (Peregian Beach, Qld). Huxtable retained priority for nearly 60 percent of the heat, but was unable to find more than one scoring wave and as a result was knocked out of the competition by Stocca who posted a decent 12.50 heat score.

While Xavier experienced the lows of competitive surfing, brother Ethan Huxtable walked away from day two of competition on a high after dominating the second round of the 12-and-Under Boys. Ethan remained busy over the duration of the heat catching multiple waves and notching up a 14.60 heat total.

Rip Curl GromSearch Wraps Up In South Australia

Yorke Peninsula, South Australia (Wednesday, Nov 16, 2016) – The fourth stop of the Rip Curl GromSearch presented by Flight Centre has just wrapped up in South Australia, and six new champions have been. The ocean offered up some testing onshore conditions at the two-day event on the Yorke Peninsula, but competitors faced the winds and swell head-on and managed to pull off some stellar performances.

Darcy De Clouett took the 16 & Under Boys division in a closely fought battle with Adam Varvaressos, who placed second, as well as Tully Wylie and Xavier Huxtable, who placed third and fourth. “Stoked to have taken the event win,” said Darcy, post-event. “It was tough out there!”

The 16 & Under Girls went to Sophia Fulton, with a dominant display against second-place winner Sophie Fletcher, third-place winner Bohdi Leigh-Jones and fourth-placed Laticia Josephson.

In the 14 and Under Boys division Jamie Thompson dominated throughout the event, eventually taking the win in an extremely close battle against Taj Stokes, who placed second. Tom Golby-Smith placed third and Arch Whiteman took fourth. “This is my second trip to the Yorke Peninsula,” said Jamie. “Our family loves coming here, and it was awesome to take the win.”

Emma Cattlin took the 14 and Under Girls, claiming back-to-back victories after her win in Western Australia during the third stop of the  Rip Curl GromSearch. Charlie Hurst placed second, Poppy Corbett placed third and Arabella Wilson came in fourth. Emma had been surfing outstandingly throughout the contest with some amazing backhand vertical snaps in the earlier rounds and in the final.

Poppy Corbett took out the 12 and Under Girls title. Placing second was Imogen Elliot, third Lucy Tandler and fourth Sarah Hutchinson
