GALLOWS BEACH, COFFS HARBOUR (Saturday, August 13, 2016): Day two of the Australian Bodyboard Titles continued today as some of Australia’s most promising bodyboarders fought to avoid elimination and edge closer towards the final rounds.

Rory Nelson (Cape Burney, WA) scored the day’s highest single wave score in the first round of the Open Drop Knee division, posting an impressive 8.75 (out of a possible 10 points). The West Australian native took full advantage of the wedgey lefthand peaks to display his power and smooth transitions and as a result sealed himself a spot straight into the semi-finals.

Also claiming wins in the opening Open Drop Knee exchanges was NSW duo Zachary Armytage (Wombarra, NSW) and local Matt Sullivan (Coffs Harbour, NSW) who both put on impressive displays of textbook Drop Knee turns to cement a position into the semi-finals.

Buzz Van-Der Waal (Kingscliff, NSW) and Patrick Franklyn (Fremantle, WA) both engaged in one of the most exciting battles of the event so far, with both surfers posting excellent scores (eight points and above) in the opening Grommets (Under-14) first round exchange. Both Van-Der-Waal and Franklyn appeared to be men on a mission as they both notched up the previously mentioned scores and finished in first and second respectively. The two surfers will meet again in their second final.

Perennial event standout Adam Keegan (Marcoola, Qld) had another brilliant day in Coffs Harbour, smashing his way to tomorrow’s semi-finals. Keegan put on the sort of performance expected from a former professional bodyboarder, throwing down a combination of massive manoeuvres to claim the win in his opening Masters (Over-35) heat.

GALLOWS BEACH, COFFS HARBOUR (Friday, August 12, 2016): The opening day of the Australian Bodyboard Titles endured a day of blustery onshore waves as Open and Junior competitors attempted to cement a position into the upcoming semi-finals.

Jake Metcalf (City Beach, WA) ensured he made his mark on the Open Mens division, performing a wide array of acrobatic manoeuvres to notch up a respectable 14.00 two-wave heat total (out of a possible 20 points). Metcalf made light work of the difficult waves executing the aerials with relative ease and as a result booked himself a spot in the quarterfinals and made it known that he’d be the man to beat in the upcoming rounds.

Other Open Mens first round winners included: Grant Gardener (Laurieton, NSW), Tawa Hura (St. Andrews Beach, Vic), Nathan Wilson (Kiama Downs, NSW) and Mitch East (Sandy Beach, NSW).

Liam Newman (Maroubra, NSW) sent a warning shot to his competitors, posting an impressive 7.75 wave score in the first round of the Cadets (Under-16) division. Newman threw down a massive combination of manoeuvres to post the previously mentioned score and get a convincing win over Henry Gibson (Falcon, WA) who claimed the runner-up spot.

Other Cadets round one heat winners included: Patrick Franklyn (Fremantle, WA) and Harry Crain (Copacabana, NSW). All three aforementioned Cadets will make their next appearance in the second round.

DIGGERS BEACH, COFFS HARBOUR (Thursday, August 11, 2016): Ten new Australian Champions were crowned today following a series of hotly contested finals in challenging waves at Diggers Beach for the final day of the NRMA Holiday Parks Australian Longboard Titles.

Josh Constable (Peregian, Qld) continued to amaze the judges and spectators over the course of the Over-35 Mens final, posting consecutive scores in the excellent range. Constable didn’t let the tiny waves faze him as he bashed out a multitude of giant hooks and snaps to post a 16.40 two-wave heat total (out of a possible 20 points) and claim the coveted trophy.

Kate Dwyer (Caloundra, Qld) added another title to Queensland's haul, claiming the Over-35 Womens division. Dwyer shone in the final, posting an impressive 15.00 heat total to take a convincing win ahead of Vivenne Cresswell (Collaroy, NSW) who took the runner-up position.

Greg Brown (Jan Juc, Vic) showed that age wasn’t going to slow him down, claiming his fourth Over-50 Mens Australian Longboard Title in as many years. Brown performed like a surfer decades younger, posting a heat total of 15.50 for an array of critical turns. Local surfer Charlie O’Sullivan (Woolgoolga, NSW) put on a valiant effort, posting 12.00, but was unable to knock Brown from the top-spot.

Alan Atkins (Byron Bay, NSW) put on a buzzer-beater effort to claim the Over-65 Mens final. With less than a minute remaining in the heat, multiple Australian Champion Neville Smith (Coolangatta, Qld) looked destined to claim the trophy, however, Atkins was able to scratch into a playful righthander that was rewarded with a 7.00 wave score and as a result was gifted the title.

Damian Coulter (Mountain Creek, Qld) posted a series of excellent wave scores in excess of 7.50 to make his presence known in the Over-40 Loggers final. Coulter’s scores allowed him to stop Greg Brown from claiming his second title of the event, thus pushing the Victorian into the runner-up spot.

Harley Ingleby (Emerald Beach, NSW) claimed his second Australian Title for 2016, taking out the Open Loggers final. Ingleby showed the same tack-sharp precision that won him the recent Open Mens final posting a near-perfect 9.00 wave score, which allowed him to keep his opposition at arms length over the duration of the heat. Runner-up Ben Considine (Barwon Heads, Vic) remained within striking distance of the win, but was unable to muster up the required 7.66 wave score needed to take the title.

The Australian Surf Festival will commence each day at 7:30am with the call for the days schedule and location confirmed via the event hotline at 6:45am. The event hotline number is 0458 247 212 which will leave a voice recorded message each morning of the event.

GALLOWS BEACH, COFFS HARBOUR (Wednesday, August 10, 2016): Day seven of the NRMA Holiday Parks Australian Longboard Titles saw all remaining finalists decided today as the event recommenced in playful two-foot wedges at Gallows Beach.

2006 World Longboard Champion Josh Constable (Peregian, Qld) put on an excellent display of longboarding in the Over-35 Mens division, posting two near-perfect scores in excess of 9.00 (out of a possible 10 points). Constable linked a chain of well-executed backside manoeuvres to notch up the aforementioned total and cement himself a spot in the final where he is set to meet Rob Smith (Caringbah, NSW), John Schmidenberg (Emerald Beach, NSW) and Scott Trew (Mullaloo, WA).

After being eliminated from the event in the Over-40 Mens semi-final, event standout Jason Livingston (Curl Curl, NSW) proceeded to put on one of the most impressive displays seen over the day in the Over-45 Mens semi-final, posting a massive 17.75 heat total (out of a possible 20 points). Livingston found rhythm in his second heat, unleashing a barrage of giant turns to cement a position in the final. Alan Atkins (Byron Bay, NSW) caused one of the biggest upsets of the event eliminating multiple Australian Longboard Champion and perennial title threat Danny Bond (Long Jetty, NSW) from the event in the semi-finals of the Over-65 Mens division. Atkins notched up an impressive 15.50 heat total to seal himself a spot into the final.

MACAULEYS BEACH, COFFS HARBOUR (Tuesday, August 9, 2016): The longboard action continued at the Australian Surf Festival today at Macauleys Beach as competitors fought to keep their Australian Title campaigns rolling towards the final days of competition.

Multiple Australian Title holder Jason Livingston (Curl Curl, NSW) didn’t let the declining swell slow down his progress, posting a 14.00 heat total (out of a possible 20 points) to claim a convincing win in the second round of the Over-45 Mens division. Livingston unleashed a barrage of massive turns over the course of the heat to take the win and book his spot into the semi-finals.

The second round of the Over-45 Mens division continued to see a series of dog-eat-dog battles as three competitors attempted to cement their position into the semi-finals.

Local surfer Charlie O’Sullivan (Woolgoolga, NSW) went out to an early lead in his respective exchange, while Neil Thompson (Scarborough, WA) and Terry Day (Coogee, NSW) duked it out for second place in the wave-starved heat. Requiring a 5.50 to cement a position into the semi-finals, Day managed to scratch into a small right-hander in the final minute of the exchange, to fall short by 0.10 margin and as a result was eliminated from the event, while O’Sullivan and Thompson sealed a spot in the final rounds.

Other Over-45 round two heat winners included Tony Rae (Hastings Point, NSW) and Brett Lalor (Apollo Bay, Vic), who will make their next appearance in the semi-finals.

Scott Trew (Mullaloo, WA) put on the most exciting performance of the morning, posting an impressive 7.00 ride in the Over-35 Mens requalification round. Trew will make his next appearance in the second batch of requalification heats, where he’ll face Chris McSween (Ocean Grove, Vic), Ryan Egan (Meadow Spring, WA) and Michael Thompson (Evans Head, NSW).

ARRAWARRA HEADLAND, COFFS HARBOUR (Monday, August 8, 2016): Longboard competitors at the 2016 Australian Surf Festival celebrated the life of iconic surfer and former World Champion Bernard “Midget” Farrelly who passed away on Sunday, 7th August.

Crowned World Champion in 1964, Farrelly won the very first official championship in Manly. Farrelly was also inducted into the Sports Australia Hall of Fame in 1985.

Over 70 Australian Longboard Title competitors and staff – many who had met and surfed with Farrelly – gathered on the shores of Arrawarra Headland to commemorate his life.

Surfing Australia CEO Andrew Stark said: “Bernard “Midget” Farrelly was one of the true icons and legends of the sport globally. He was the first Aussie World Champion and the first surfer in this country to truly become a household name and surfing identity among the broader population. He was instrumental in the development of the sport and Surfing Australia in its early days and has absolutely left an amazing legacy. We pass on our condolences to the Farrelly family.”

Farrelly friend and Surfing NSW Director Harry Hodge shared the same sentiments: “Midget had a significant influence on so many aspects of surfing; whether it was shaping, competing or travelling and he was never one to search for accolades for his contribution to the sport. He was a devout family man that has left the sport with an incredible legacy. He will be missed.”

PARK BEACH, COFFS HARBOUR (Saturday, August 6, 2016): The NRMA Holiday Parks Australian Longboard Titles saw four new Australian Longboard Champions crowned today after a handful of hotly contested finals in punchy four-foot waves.

Former two-time World Champion and three-time Australian Champion Harley Ingleby (Emerald Beach, NSW) looked unstoppable in the Open Men’s final with the local surfer posting a handful of excellent scores. When closest rival and 2006 World Champion Josh Constable (Peregian, Qld) copped an interference mid-way through the heat, Ingleby was handed the win with a heat total of 17.40 (out of a possible 20 points). Over the course of the event, Ingleby notched up five of the top ten scoring waves in the Open Men’s division.

“Growing up, winning an Aussie Title is one of those things you dream of, so to have won it three times now feels amazing,” said Ingleby. “Josh is obviously super hard to beat and even when I had him close to being in a combination situation, I knew I would still need to stay smart until the very end as he was more than capable of upsetting me for the win.”

Molly Powell (Anglesea, Vic) put on a commanding performance to take out the Open Women’s final and bag Victoria its first title for the Australian Surf Festival. In a battle that saw all finalists’ post one impressive score, Powell gained the upper-hand thanks to holding onto two solid scores, which equated to a 12.00 heat total. As a result, Michalea Ross (Denmark, WA) was left chasing a 6.01 wave score that never came to fruition and gifted Powell the coveted trophy.

“I kinda wasn’t expecting this, I keep thinking I need to go back out there and surf again, I’m sure it will hit me later,” said Powell. “ The waves are really similar to home even though the paddle out was a bit more difficult. I’ve been second to Emma Webb for a few years at the Victorian Titles so this is my first opportunity to come up here and give it a go. I’m over the moon.”

The Junior Men’s final came down to a nail-biting final minute exchange with the lead ping-ponging back-and-forth between the finalists, however with less than a minute remaining Frank Murphy (Yamba, NSW) was able to post a 6.35 wave score and usurp the win from Nicholas Brewer (Castaways Beach, Qld) who was holding down the lead prior to Murphy’s aforementioned wave. When the results were all locked in, there was only a 1.50 margin separating first, second and third place.

After claiming fourth position in the Open Women’s division, Tully White (Allambie Heights, NSW) was able to flip her final results on their head in the Junior Women's final, taking out the Australian Title. The Northern Beaches native posted a decent 13.00 heat total which allowed her to keep her fellow finalists at arms length.

PARK BEACH, COFFS HARBOUR (Friday, August 5, 2016): After unpredictable weather caused a lay day at the Australian Surf Festival yesterday, the NRMA Holiday Parks Australian Longboard Titles recommenced today with Open Mens and Womens finalists being decided in clean, but solid four-to-five foot waves at Park Beach.

Local surfer Harley Ingleby (Emerald Beach, NSW) showed why he’s a former two-times World Champion, earning his position into the Open Men's final. The silky smooth natural-footer put on an impressive display of nose-rides, mixed with a combination of powerful turns to take out his semi-final with an 8.00 (out of a possible ten points) and a 7.00 wave score to give him a notable 15.00 heat total. Anthony Spencer (WA) took the runner-up position in the semi to also cement his spot in the final.

Joining Ingleby in the semi-final winners circle was fellow former World Champion Josh Constable (Peregian, Qld). Ironically, Constable posted the exact same wave scores and heat total as Ingleby in the previous semi-final to cement his position in the upcoming Open Men's final. Declan Wyton (Annandale, NSW) claimed the runner-up position and as a result will face off with Ingleby, Spencer and Constable in the blue-ribbon battle.

Michalea Ross (Denmark, WA), Lara Murphy (Woonoona, NSW), Molly Powell (Anglesea, Vic), Tully White (Allambie Heights, NSW) all put on stellar performances to seal their positions in the forthcoming Open Women's final. Both Ross and Powell mustered up impressive victories in their respective semi-finals to cement their positions into the highly contested division.

Declan Wyton (Annandale, NSW) was awarded the NRMA Holiday Parks Noseride of the Day for an impressive nose ride in the first round. Wyton was awarded a NRMA Holidays Parks gift voucher as a result of the wave.

Competition will commence each day at 7:30am with the call for the days schedule and location confirmed via the event hotline at 6:45am. The event hotline number is 0458 247 212 which will leave a voice recorded message each morning of the event.
